Brake job from H3!! - sighhh

I just purchased this 2002 SC430 and the brakes seems a bit loud. Since this is TYPICALLY such an inexpensive and DYI job, I decided to replace rotors (slotted and drilled) and shoes on the back (back rotors had grooving), and just the shoes on the front. Front had drilled and slotted in great shape. No issues with the back except for the odd spring retainer thing. The front was a whole different story. Passenger side caliper pin was stuck, drivers side broke one wheel stud, and stripped two studs.

The passenger side caliper pin really was not that bad in hindsight. Took the part off, had to heat it to get the pin out, but I did not have a torch, but I did have a gas stove :-). After getting it really hot, used the impact wrench to get it spinning, and it came out. Decided to replace both while I was at it.

The lug bolts really were not that hard to replace. Removed caliper and caliper pin holder, then rotor. Used a hammer to knock the bad bolts out. Replaced with new, and used impact wrench to reseat them.

Parts for repair:
  • Disc brake caliper guide pin kit (comes with two) $8.19
  • M12-150 studs $2.49 each
  • Set of new lug nuts and the tool $30, could have got it from Amazon for $15, but needed them today.
I sure am glad that is over!

Welcome to Club Lexus, wanting450.
Thanks for sharing the brake job info. Having done my rears, non-Lexus pads and rotors, and fronts, pads only, I thankfully did not have any of the issues you experienced. I was wondering about your mileage and if the car had a Lexus service history.
Bad lug bolts and nuts sounds like someone in a hurry with an impact wrench ( set to max ) with no final torque to spec on the nuts with a torque wrench.

167k miles, good service history except for the last 15k miles, meaning all done at non-Lexus, but at least a clear history of service. The owner I bought it from changed out the wheels. The other three wheels came off without an issue, it was just the last. While I was replacing the lugs, there were a few on the same "wheel" that looked like they might give me trouble in the future, so I decided to replace those as well since I had everything disabled.

Thanks for the update. Good plan with those marginal studs. You know they'll be an issue in the near future. Might have been one bad lug nut that got passed around that damaged the treads on several studs.
How do the brakes feel with slotted and drilled rotors? I have almost 40k on my front pads and am getting ready for that job in the summer.

I am really torn. I put slotted and drilled on the RX350, and I cannot "hear" or "feel" a difference, but with the SC430, I hear and feel them. I have never had slotted and drilled, so I am guessing this normal. Actually, I did the Porsche experience once and the sound/feel was very similar, but we were really tearing the brakes up!!

What is a set? 5 or 20 lugnuts? I assume it was for 5 but i can't help but to ask , just to be sure.
Thanks

That is called "placebo". It is a universally accepted engineering parameter.

It's a relatively easy and inexpensive fix. I bought these, watched a couple of videos and put them on the SC pretty easy.
