Default 2002 SC 430 timing belt broke after water pump replaced

I bought at low mileage 2002 SC 430 from DCH Santa Barbara Lexus and the salesman said they had just put $5K in the car including a new water pump. It had 70K miles and I assumed they had replaced the timing belt.

one month later, the timing belt broke. The dealer is looking to see if engine has internal damage. Since the belt broke at freeway speeds +65MPH, I am sure the valves and pistons made CONTACT. HOW COULD IT NOT HAVE INTERNAL DAMAGE?

so sorry to hear this terrible news and yes, certain piston(s) made contact with certain valve(s).

didnt they provide a warranty on their work?
dealers usually provide 12mo warranty on their work.

if not, it might be cheaper to purchase a lower mileage engine from a salvage yard and take it to a good independent mechanic. Rebuilding is too expensive.

$1,000 for a used engine with 64k miles.

That doesn't sound good. Hopefully, being a Lexus dealership, they will stand behind their work.

If Lexus sold you that car being a 2002 regardless of miles without replacing the timing belt they are clearly in the wrong. If you call any Lexus dealer in the country and ask if timing belt should be replaced on a 2002 model regardless of miles they will say yes do it immediately. Recommendations for Toyota or Lexus from dealers on TB age is 7-10 years max. The timing belt in a 2002 model is 16-17 years old at this point if it was original. If they did replace the TB with the water pump they did it wrong or they did not replace tension er or other critical part with the belt, because the belts never break when new. IN 10 years on the forum I have never read any post of a TB breaking when even remotely new and very rarely when well past miles normally required to replace. TB break on an SC430 is pretty rare issue.

OH WOW! Keep us posted, I'd like to know how Lexus stand behind their stuff.
I bought a 2002 about 4 yrs ago with 75k miles, I took it to an independent shop when the car reached about 90k, I asked to replace water pump, tensioners etc, there are kits out there that shops can get. Also get a sticker in the engine compartment that identifies the changed TB.
Maybe you could ad some after market stuff in the replacement engine to get more horse power or whatever you want.
GOOD LUCK!!
