Intermittent problems with reverse gear engaging. No problems on first start up, however, frequently won't go into reverse. All other gears are fine. Eventually with gentle tapping on the accelerator (or excessive revving - not ideal if there isn't much space as car shoots back at great speed!!) the car will move. Have seen a few posts about this but does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
First thing I'd do is to go have the ECM codes read to see if the ECM is throwing any errors regarding the AT. If there are no error codes, I'd next check AT fluid, if it is not clear and pink in color or smells even slightly burnt I'd do four sequential AT drain and fills. Buy a case (12 quarts) of the correct AT fluid as specified in the owners manual. You should be draining about 3 quarts of old fluid on each drain and refill. Drive the car long enough between each D&F to insure the car goes through all the gears. It is critical that you use the correct AT fluid. Also allow the car to cool down at least an hour or more between each of the D&Fs. Hopefully this may cure your issue. If the problem persists next step is likely to pull the AT pan and see if there is a lot of debris in it - clean out pan and AT filter screen to insure it is not clogged.
If problem still persists it is time to take it to a pro AT specialist - may be something relatively simple like one of the shift solenoids. There have also been so reports of an intermittent problem with the engine ECM that can cause shifting issues with the AT.

Jabberwok is spot on and gave you excellent advise!
what you didn’t tell us was the...
how many miles?
has the transmission fluid ever been changed?
if yes, how many times and when was the last?
these cars have an excellent transmission, but with any car, the fluid gets dirty and breaks down. It must be changed. I do a drain and refill every 12k-15k Miles because it is easy and ensures the transmission will be trouble free.
according to the internet, it could be low transmission fluid pressure. This is due to low fluid or a bad transmission fluid pump. Or it could be your torque convertor.
