SC430 Timing Belt & Water Pump

Thanks Dink for the great write-up! I'm looking to do my belt in a couple of years and I have a few questions. Did you follow the procedure in the Lexus shop manual (I noticed some of your steps were different)? For instance, you didn't remove the radiator. Wouldn't doing so provide more room-to-move in the front of the engine bay? While torquing the crank pulley bolt to 181 ft. lbs., did you use a special tool to hold the pulley in place? If you thought of it before, would you have rotated the crank/belt several revolutions with the new belt in place to check the timing marks were still aligned, prior to reinstalling the crank pulley (making the belt's crank mark no longer visible)? In hindsight, anything you would have done differently?

Nice job on the DIY, but I'm confused why you say to not get any FIPG into the sealing groove. In the manual, it states "Apply seal packing to the sealing groove of water inlet housing as shown in the illustration (Seal Width 2−3 mm)."

you certainly should have had them change the tensioner, tensioner pulley and idler pulley because the tensioner will go bad along with the pulley bearings.
I am not trying to feel bad...just giving an opinion that's worth about two cents. It's just easy to replace those parts when you are in there.
i also would have had them replace the drive belts and hoses since they were removed for this job.
the OEM Aisin kit provides all three items.

Purchase it from a trusted source, probability will be high that they are OEM.

I'm sure it is genuine Aisin (the water pump anyway), but that doesn't necessarily mean all the parts in the kit are exact copies of the parts you would get at Toyota/Lexus (true OEM). Why risk it on this critical job? Source from a Toyota/Lexus dealer and sleep better at night!

Good evening everyone,
I just had my local Toyota dealer replace my timing belt and water pump on my 2004 SC 430. At 150,000 I know I was in the danger zone as far as replacing the belt but I sleep and drive a little easier knowing it's done. The dealer did not replace any tensioners and when I asked about them I was told that they were in good condition.
Should I have requested that they be changed? Usually the dealers are not shy about wanting to keep their service department in business.
