well first of all to Change the water pump requires you do do everything it takes to change the timing belt . If the timing belt breaks teeth it will more than likely ruin the engine. since both the pistons and valves occupies the same space, just not at the same time. Unless the timing belt breaks. No sense in not changing the water pump at the same time. If the water pump should wear out a bearing, leak, and maybe cause teeth to break off the belt. My brother in law can now tell you why a timing belt is a maintenance item. It cost him dearly when his broke. This is true for every car with a timing belt, his happened to be a Mitsubishi.
