Default Screeching static with radio on or off, amp???

02, sc430 started making a terrible screeching static with radio on or off. If radio is on and the 20 seconds of screeching is over the radio has no sound but the display still works. Same thing with CD. Also get the static when the radio is off and also in the accessory only position. I pulled the 47 fuse and the static doesn't happen. Does this mean it's the ML amp? If so is the amp hard to get out? I'm handy enough but no electronics experience. Thanks everyone!

The amp is in the trunk. (There are a few threads in this forum discussing how to do it.) Various trunk pieces (carpet, etc.) have to be removed to get to it. I believe that it is right next to the NAV device there in the trunk.

As to what is causing the noise, I'm not sure. Are you saying that if the headunit is on, it screeches regardless of what mode it is in but if it is completely off it is silent? Or are you saying that it screeches in all modes and even with the headunit turned off unless you pull the fuse?

Mine did a similar thing about two years ago. I had to pull the fuse to the amp to make it stop. I purchased a used ML amp off ebay and had it installed at a local car audio shop. The unit cost me $100.00 and it was $120.00 for installation. All is well again. The amp is not hard to get out and it is literally plug and play. I just didn't want to mess with it myself. The units are about $1800.00 new.

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, the screeching static happens regardless if the radio is on or off. Happens while in accessory ignition mode or while running. I found the service diagnostic screen and it says check audio h/u, nav euc and amp. Noise does go away if I pull the 47 fuse. I've been searching the site for fiy but sorta hard to do on a phone lol

I get it. That is exactly what mine was doing. Even with the unit off it would screech. I had to pull the fuse.

Iolmaster - yes, thinking I'm going to try to do the same as you. Just hoping I can find an audio shop as reasonable as yours to do the install. Did that price included tearing the trunk up to get at it?

It really isn't hard. The only reason I didn't want to do it at the time is I was busy with other things and just wanted it done right away. You do have to pull out most of the trunk liner. There are little plastic clips that have to be removed and the amp is very easy to access. Someone that does it for a living can have it done very quickly. The $120.00 was for 1.5 hours of labor. The wires are all keyed and are easy to identify. So yes, the $120.00 was for everything.
