in short, no?
it just holds the cover roll.
why do you ask?

Thanks BGW. I am looking for ways to reduce the weight of the vehicle to improve performance. Hence, I have removed the resonators, the spare wheel, and luggage cover, and replaced the wheels with lighter-weight ones. I hardly use the trunk so the luggage cover was superfluous, and I have put a can of Moto tyre repair in the trunk in lieu of the spare. I was worried that removing the luggage cover housing may impact the rigidity of the vehicle.

Have you kept track of how much weight that you've managed to remove?

Hey JMal, when you say remove weight to improve performance, is that to go faster or more kilometers to the litre or both?
Just curious, 'cause I've my Golf Clubs in the trunk of my '79 Cadillac Eldorado all the time seeing that I play twice a week. Deleting all the items you mentioned to me is very trivial unless you use the SC for dragging.

At ~1700 kg (3800 lbs), do you really notice any improvement by reducing 30 kg? I do not think removing that much weight is going to improve any detectable acceleration. IF I was going to remove weight, passenger seat and the rear seats would be a good candidate. I bet those are several hundred lbs. Or replace both front seats with lighter sport seats, but still you are limited with engine - transmission that is not build for very fast acceleration. The gain in acceleration would still be minimal. I would say the weight would help with handling and cornering though.

With hardtop being the crown jewel of this car many of us would have hard time understanding compromising the convertible feature to gain minute acceleration improvement. If you do a rough physics calculation: a=F/M the gain in a (acceleration) with 3900lb vs 3902lb would be less than 1/1000. Are you racing car with someone where 0.001 sec is going to make the difference? Otherwise, just step on the gas a bit more you will gain all the acceleration you need out of the car.

Thank you for the feedback. The convertible feature still operates with a wedge in place where the blind used to slot in.

there was another fellow on here that was into weight reduction. He purchased a battery that weighs about five pounds. His name on here is bacardi11

look him up and send him a PM or search for his threads. I think he would really like to help you! Great guy!
