He just did all the required maintenance work with timing belt change (3 times, each at 100k miles mark). He services the car with us and has full record with him and was in our system as well. We gave him $500 as trade, he was pissed off and wanted $2,000 for it..... He kept the car.....
...i"ll try to find a couple pics of my old LS400, I sold it with 305,000 on it ($3500) and it was queit as a mouse. The only issue I ever had was replacing an alternator, which was burned out by a power steering hose leak, everything else was just regular maintenance. My SC has 164,000 on it and so far,no major issues !!!

My friend in Atlanta picked me up and drove me to lunch when I was there on biz last month in his mid 90s ES300 - it had 397k on the clock with no motor or trans work. Just oil, brakes and TB when needed. Car rode a little weird as he is still on original shocks/struts. Inside was worn and faded but no rips, tears or cracks, etc. Car is not garaged.

I figured only a Lexus can have 397K and still run.

Default Squeaking

I have 2002 SC-430 and have done all the required maintenance here in Manhattan. As a City person I have a bit under 60k miles and cant really complain except for the squeaking noises. Brought it in to Lexus dealer and they couldn't find it and sadly it really takes away from my driving experience. It isn't constant but when it happens . . . it so takes away from the pleasure I once had. Sounds like it comes from the front and not from the shocks. Sometimes the ride is quiet and great while other times sounds like I am in a taxi-anyone else having similar issues?

I bought my 2006 SC430 two years ago with 176,466 miles on it. The ride was beyond impossible, like a hobby horse but I knew the problem (original struts from new, never replaced!). the seller replaced the front brakes and rotors. and I paid for the Timing belt replacement which was just due. I drove it home 1,600 miles to Texas. Aside from the ride which could make you drunk, it was perfect with 29mpg. Later I did the following maintenance. The alternator being the only unexpected maintenance and it was 17 years old with 179K miles on it....what can you expect?

176466 Replaced front brake rotors and pads Beaufort SC
176466 Air Bag recall performed Beaufort SC
176466 Replaced water pump, idler, and timing belt Beaufort SC $1,686.12
179440 Rebuilt alternator Ingleside TX $250
181480 Four new struts, Front tower brace, wipers New Rear Rotors and pads, front alignment Ingleside TX $1,600.00
188616 replaced battery Ingleside TX $132
188782 Replaced Horn Ingleside TX $30

current mileage 196,000

20K miles later its running like new, rides almost as good as the LS 430. I expect to reach at least 300K. As you can see, Low maintenance. Only scheduled maintenance, tires and battery. I did an oil analysis and it showed to be in perfect condition.

In hind sight I think the alternator was the dealers fault because they didnt tighten the mounting bolt after they did the TB replacement and the lug on the alternator broke because it was wobbling.

As has been said, almost any car properly maintained will last! We have a Dodge Charger with 340,000 miles and going strong, and my ram truck is about half way there with 150,000. My SC430 only has 58,000 So I'm thinking it will be around a while!

I wonder if that is so? I want an Alfa Romeo Gulia so bad I can taste it but all I hear is how poorly they are built. Do you think I could overcome the bad build with TLC?

I bought anew ford escort in 1980 and drove it for ten years and near 200,000 miles and finally gave it away to a kid because I was tired of looking at it. They were not highly regarded on this side of the pond.; But the only problem I had...and fixed...was that they mounted the ignition module to the side of the engine block. Once moved to the fender well it quit blowing out.

I wanted a classic Fiat Spider but I hear they constantly need attention and that the electrical system is full of gremlins. I think the Alfa might be in the same category

Of course I had a Ferrari 308 and even though I didn't have any major issues while I had it, I didn't drive it too often. (since the 30,000 mile tune up was about $5000 back then) So I guess the statement might be true, but some cars need more TLC, days off, and money invested than other cars..
