Default What is this plug for?

So I was taking apart my shifter area to decide on drilling a hole for the ipod cable into the arm rest area when I noticed there is a plug that plugs into the cup holder. When you look at the cup holder female side there are no elecctronics in there.

What is the point? Is this some option that my car didnt have?

I have the same thing in my car I beleive it is for what is called in the UK a mayday phone. I think the wires of the plug terminate in the trunk near the navigation but there not plugged into anything, I thought of using these wires if i wanted a mod that needed to get from the trunk to the consol. I still have to check it out

There are a number of prewired harness throughlout the car that are not in use
