Default Updating Nav Disc

I don't use my Nav very often if ever, but I recently drove the new IS250 convertible and the nav in that is awesome as far as looks and on screen options. If I were to update my nav disc (which is still from 2002) would I get any new software to make it look similar to the new lexus' or is it going to look the exact same as mine now just with more streets updated? Thanks in advance.

Depends on the Generation of the NAV system. If you have a 2002 car then you are Gen 2/3 and updating your disc to the newest version (10.1) just released in Oct 2010 will only update your streets. You will not see dramatic difference in the GUI, like the one you saw in the 2010 IS. Also remember the street database is most likely close to, if not already, a year old when published. Lexus says it takes that long to gather and then verify the data.

I also bought a 2002 that still had the original OEM Gen 2/3 DVD in it. I upgraded to 9.1 and saw no difference in the GUI. It gave me updated streets and POI's, but took away the ability to enter a destination while the car is moving. The updated streets were worth the upgrade, but I didn't like Lexus deciding we couldn't drive safely or allow a passenger to enter a destination. I understand once you upgrade, you can't go back.

True, no difference in GUI with 9.1 and the installation is stated to be irreversible. This GUI may be a limitation of firmware in the nav unit itself. However, you can still use the override in the diagnostic menu to access the destination selection features while the car is in motion. You just need to do it every time you think you might need it which is somewhat of a bother. The updated streets and POIs are probably worth the money especially if you're coming from the original 2002 disc.
