Default Power steering service

I had a spare 1/2 hour this evening so I decided to do change the power steering fluid. Even though the previous owner had service the SC430 at the same Lexus dealer every 10,000km it seems either the power steering is due for a service or has never been done.

The Dexron 3 oil was in a sad state. It was nearly black in colour and thick to touch between my fingers. So I sucked out all the old fluid and put new fluid in. Run the car turning left and right. I repeated this procedure until the fluid I sucked out was nice and red. I think I removed about 3 litres of Dexron 3 until it was clean.

Glad I did this as a I don't want to rebuild power steering.

I'm going to do the brakes, diff oil and tranny fluid this weekend.

Nice!!! Thanks for the post. Any tips/pics on the tools used would be very helpful for others. I have done this before with same method for years with a turkey baster and then got fancy and bought a fluid syphon gadget from Autozone. Last time I did it I made a freaking mess of smelly PS fluid in my garage in the middle of summer and stunk it up forever so next time I may just pay my lube n' tune (valvoline instant oil change) the $59 to flush/fill.

I use a cheap air bleeder tool which sucks out all the old fluid from the reservoir.
