Default Trunk Size Questions

Since we're going to be buying a LS430 as a daily driver, my wife suddenly has expressed interest in a SC430 as a possible replacement for our Cadillac Allante summer car. However, my wife uses a wheelchair and her travel chair would have to fit. The dimensions of the folded chair are 30" long, 24" wide, and 10" high.

Will the chair fit in the trunk with the top up?

With the top down?

Am I correct in assuming that if the chair fits in the trunk with the top down, I wouldn't be able put the chair into / out of the trunk with the top down?

Thanks!

The trunk is an irregular shape. To determine if the chair fits with the top up, you would really have to try it out at the dealership. I can pretty much guarantee that it would not fit in the trunk with the top down, even if you remove the floor piece, which provides additional deeper storage. A space saving spare tire barely fits if that gives you some idea of how limited the space is. The good news is that the chair would probably fit pretty easily in the back seat if the top was down, albeit it would take some agility to load it. Depending on how much you love this car, you might want to consider a trailer hitch type rack. There was a thread awhile ago which had pics from a guy who did a trailer hitch type rack for his bike. Looked pretty good.

I think it would probably fit with the top up, again, easiest to just test this. but I am almost positive it wouldn't fit with the top down. nothing really fits with the top down. but there is a good amount of room in the back seat for storage. The only real reason they put the backseat there was for storage when the top was down. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Those were the answers I expected. I'm not crazy about going back to a car where the chair is in the passenger cabin. That (and the low entry / exit) is why I left Corvettes and went to the Allante. We mainly use the car for summer cruising to dinner, friends, etc. If I bought a more modern car, I would probably also use it as a summer daily driver. But, my mechanic (and his kids' orthodontist) would be happier if I kept the Allante.

I used to get a wheel chair into an SC400 trunk but I had to take the foot rests off. If you have a lightweight high-end chair with removable foot rests you "might" be able to get it in the trunk with the top up but I'd have to say never with the top down. Taking the wheels off is another option that might help flatten it out even further. I've gone car shopping many times with our wheel chair in hand. My wife passed away several years ago so I don't have a chair any longer or I'd give it a try for you. Good luck!

Her travel chair is a transport chair with 8 or 10 inch wheels all around and folding push handles.

Sorry to hear about your wife.
