Odometer Problems
posting a question for my sc430 friend in vancouver bc
here is a short story:
2003 sc430 with 30k left unattended for 2months in the garage while on vacations...
garage roof leaked all over the car...with the top down...
now car was steam cleaned, rus well but get this ( and i ve seen this with my own eyes!) odometer shows 901010 km !!! i will take a picture of the odo next week. we tried calling lexus and they said its not possible. my friend is freaking out and ive never seen anything like this.
1. how do we get the odo back to 30 k ? previous km?
2. why would lexus void warranty?
3. where?who? woudl be able to help my buddy? with new cluster or?

2. unless you friend can prove that b4 he left the obo only had 30k, how is lexus to kno how far the car has gone?
3. see '1.'
ps: just out of curiosity, was this a building downtown? or a private resedence? if this is a building downtown ur friend definately has actions he can take, because this would fall under something like poor building maintenance
I have a suspicion that the ODO computer does not actually "think" it has
900k miles on it. Have you ever accidentally cracked or gotten wet one of those old Casio digital watches? They suddenly display "82:88 O'clock" or something bizarre. If the dash got remotely wet inside the seals of the instrument cluster, it would find it's way into the gages.
I deduce that the water continually splashed into the interior filling up the three cylinders that house the gages (the center of which houses the speedo/ODO). Since the cylinders are tilted upward they would capture and "pool" the water in the speedo cylinder. It then seeped into the gage (the bottom of which is the ODO where the water would collect) and by the time he came back, the water had evaporated and the damage was done leaving no evidence.
I would bet that if a new display was plugged into the harness at the ODO itself it would probably display "30K"

Too bad your not close by as I have a spare (I'm a sucker for Ebay).
Best bet is to pull it out and dismantle the thing. The odometer unit is a seperate unit inside the cluster and can be removed. Check for moisture anywhere and everywhere.
Best of luck
