Default 2 Newb questions

Gents,
I am about to take delivery of a new 06 SC 430 from Longo Lexus in El Monte CA. The car is sliver with Ecru. I can't wait!

A couple things as I try to get smart on this car.

1. Are oil changes easy to do? Access etc? I have ramps and a hydro jack.

2. Is this the biggest forum for this car? 4-5 post per day seems light although I am not used to such a low production car.

3. Anything I ought to do right away?

Thanks in advance. steve

steve, welcome to the club. i am pretty sure others like pearlpower can chip in for services related questions. As to what this site brings, if you own a Lexus this is the site you want to be period. although lots of threads are aftermarket oriented, you can definitely find lots of valueable information if you "search" it. One thing I will recommend you do right away is trying to get rid of the RFT and maybe the suspension (if you are planning on modding your car). Lastly, if you want to meet more other SC owners here is So. Cal. then you want to PM me as soon as you see this.

Hi there Steve and welcome aboard

To answer the best I can:

Yes, this is the,"largest" forum for these cars. It can be light at times; however I have found that SC430 owners are,"different" for the most part vs. other Lexus owners and similar to LS owners . But, do not let that dissuade you in any way as most anything you will want has most likely been discussed and is only a SEARCH away.

On the oil changes, it is a pretty easy job. The lower shroud must be removed from under the engine; just be careful installing the shroud screws as they strip easily. You already have ramps and a jack so just make sure you align the jack in the notches on the side of the car for trouble free lifting. Otherwise just a filter and some good oil.

Right away? Hmmm, how do those run flat tires working out for you? I understand that the 06 and 07 have different tires/suspension settings to counter the largest complaint that has plagued this car since its inception; very jittery handing.

Most have switched out the RTF for the conventional tires and the difference is night and day. I have always stated the SC430 would have sold a few more and would have ranked higher in comparisons if not for those #$%^&* tires. My wife would not even drive the car as she did not care for the car making lane changed on it's own on the freeway due to the bounce associated with the RFT.

Otherwise a very trouble free ride, just get used to the attention you will receive.

Thanks for the replies. The car is coming tomorrow and I can't wait to pull it off the truck and take a spin. It is being trucked from el monte CA to San Diego where I live. My dad knows that I am getting this car for my wife (no gift just a replacement). He mentioned that I should wait till she gets home to let her be the first to drive the new car. I am thinking, "is he crazy?! My son and I are going cruising!".

I will probably change the oil for the first time at around 500 miles and then at 3K intervals. I will stay away from the synthetics till 30K miles or so.

Is there a good place to get a shop manual? Does anyone know if they come in DVD or hard copy?

I cannot imagine that I will change the tires much before they are due unless the ride is REALLY bad. I am just too cheap by nature. It sounds as though the run flats will only last 12K miles anyway.

Thanks for the welcome and as I have questions I will toss them out.

Is there an easy way to work around the feature that disables the navigation system while you are driving? It is a killer to be a passenger and not be able to mess with the Nav.

Also I wonder about having the top activate with the remote from outside the car.

There is another link here on the Luxlink aftermarket unit that allows opening the top with the remote.

On the nav, there is an option to disable this safety feature by pressing in a combination of keys on the screen. Not sure if it works on a 06 though. These cars have a speed sensor that tells the computer if the car is in motion and to disable the nav functions. It can easily be bypassed with a switch, but one has to ask themselves if installing a switch is what they want.
