Default Horn mystery

My horns suddenly went dead. So, the first thing I checked was the fuse no.7 - 10A in the engine compartment: the fuse was blown. I thought it was an easy fix. Not so. After I replaced the fuse, still no horn. I was worry it’s the spiral cable. Next thing I checked was the voltage at the horn when it is activated. There was 12v at the connector. I was released not the cable. But still no horn. I removed both horns, apply 12v to the terminal. No sound. Obviously, the horns are dead.

My questions: what caused the fuse blown? Why both horns were fried? Why didn’t the fuse protect them?

I will get the new horns but I am worry they will be fried again. Thought?

Are you connecting the horns directly to the battery?
do they make a clicking sound when you apply 12vdc to them?

i don’t have my wiring diagrams with me so i don’t know if it applies a ground or 12vdc when the horn switch is pressed.

i have no clue why it blew the fuse…perhaps a short in the system somewhere.
did you wash the engine recently?

I applrlied 12V to the horns (both of them, one at the time) from the DC voltage generator. Positive to the connector and Negative to the screw on the housing. No click, just dead.

No, I did not wash the engine bay.

I did, however, use the steering lock, the one that goes across the steering wheel. Occasionally, it presses against the hub and makes the honk when I do the lock. It could be the reason, but it does not make any sense.

I wonder if it damaged your clock spring...... But it shouldn't since none of the wires inside the hub has been messed with

Possibly enough pressure occurred to cause a continuous horn activation....and fried both it and the fuse?

Would have thought that the horn would work with the key off.....but I've never tried it in my SC430...

I am leaning the other way; my guess is your fuse blew because your horn's don't work. Not your horns don't work because the fuse blew. In essence, your fuse did it's job

If you are eager to solve the problem, you can buy a generic horn from Amazon. With that you can see if your system works

Then you can buy some oem ones from ebay, BY THE WAY, EBAY SAYS THERE IS A HORN RELAY, so that maybe your problem

Thanks Daryl. I’m pretty sure that my steering wheel lock bar did kill my horns. I will get the Amazon horns and will modify the lock so it will not touch the hub.

Daryl, do you know where the horns relay is? I checked the owner manual and could not find anything.

#39+ for a horn to test is outrageous... You can get a cheap ($15) at Autozone or Oreilleys
