Default What causes metal hitting metal noise when i go over bumps?

Whenever i go over divets or bumps it sounds and feels like my suspension is going to break. It's never a smooth ride. Always clanking noise (metal hitting metal). It's not the shocks. I hate driving my car. Can anybody help me and tell me what's causing this problem.

I also had the same problem with a 1999 Lexus LS400 with stock rims. I thought it was the shocks so i changed all of them but still had the same problem.

Sorry forgot to include that i have 20" Maya DTS rims with Bridgestone tires. Can it be that the hub rings are a different size? The rims came off a GS300.

Are you sure that it is not the brakes? The brakes clanking is a common problem, typically heard after changing direction (forward to backward or backward to forward).

If that is the case, there is nothing to worry about. You can either live with it (no problems are known to result from it other than the noise) or follow the directions listed in an earlier thread (I believe from this year) on how to rectify it.

Do you have the stock pie-plate wheels? Many of them rattle when going over a larger bump in the road...

If I had to guess, and I do because of the vague description (divots? and breaking noise??).

I would guess he is talking about roof noise (breaking noise) over uneven road surfaces (divots). Does it make the noise with the roof down? If it does than it's not the roof.

Yes, the roof can be adjusted, It will take a professional. The dealer is probably best.

Try a search for roof noise. You have to be logged in to search the forum.

I have a quite a bit of suspension noise thats not roof related, i think it is the sway bar bushings from some of the other threads I've read on here. Does anyone know if the CPO warranty would cover it (outside of the original warranty).

I had a squeaking noise I thought was the sway bar bushings. Turned out to be the hood. Hood stop adjustment fixed the problem.
