Anyone in need of a 1 button key should research into that and find out if the aftermarket ever made an alternative to profit from all the demand. I remember hearing people say the 1 button key ran out of stock sometime before the Recession. For years people have just been SOL.

*BUT*

If you need a 1 button master key for you SC, 1 button keys were brought back into production at some point in the past 2 years.
Part # 89742-24070
You can order this thru any Lexus dealer and find them on ebay.
So if your key is broken, you can get a new one.
Do you know if this key and its matching transmitter part number will work on 1992-1994 SC300/400's? According to the Lexus EPC system it is a 1995+ model year compatible key. Perhaps it does work on all model years prior to the later key design?

Any idea if that key will work on a 97's keyless entry? I've got 1 original key and I'm trying to decide the best remote. If there is a key/remote option for the 97's that'd be 2 of those birds!

TNSC,

I went to my local Lexus dealership and they were able to cut me a remote key for $139.64. I have '95 SC400 as well. All I had to do was bring in my existing key.

You can buy the 95 key uncut on ebay from a dealership in AZ, and then bring your current key with the blank and the local Lexus dealer will be able to cut it.

The 95's are programmable keys as long as you have your original key.

I honestly don't know. I know it is the 1 button key and physically will work for the cylinder BUT I do not know anything about the transmitter part. You would have to verify that with someone who works for Lexus parts. I worked parts for Toyota and I had access to some Lexus parts but we had no access to information like what you are asking about.

That's a hard no. The antitheft system on the OBD2 cars are completely different, and have more in common with the 98+ cars than the 95 and older cars. The 96+ cars have 4 channel remotes: lock, unlock, trunk, and panic.

Thanks! So, based on your post I'm guessing the 96 and 97 cars had some remote specific to those years. Know the part number for that remote, by chance?

89742-50510 Remote Control Transmitter

Lexus dealership. Show up at the parts counter with the insurance card or registration for your SC. They will photocopy your photo ID and the car info for their records (it's for legal reasons) then use the VIN to get the keycode. Ask them to write down the keycode for you so you have a record of it. With this keycode you can get a key cut by any locksmith or even a Toyota dealership in the future.
I posted up the prices of "dumb" Lexus keys a few posts above, but if you ask them to cut you a "test key" they may do it for free... or maybe charge you like $7-15. "Test key" are just blank metal keys dealerships use to make sure they cut keys right on cars that are older or if they have key machines that have a history of calibration issues

If by chance you got the wallet key with your SC, your keycode will be stamped into it. ***The plastic rectangle; it will be a 4 digit code. There is nothing on the aluminum key itself.

Finally got my spare key
Back in the day in California I checked w a Lexus Dealer for a spare and was told I could only get a remote key from them for $250. So since then I haven't bothered w dealers and I've been able to get keys in shopping mall kiosks and hardware stores, but lately that hasn't worked, largely to covid and where I live now. There isn't a Lexus dealer within a 100 miles and places just don't carry those keys anymore.
There is one Toyota dealer and I went there this week. Said they could make me 2 dumb keys for $17.50, got a big smile on my face, went to make them and found they didn't have the center cut keys. They sent me to this Key & lock shop and they still had some. Got me one for $40
Now I don't panic every time I can't find my 1 key

After reading this thread, feel very fortunate that we still have the original 2 master keys and the 1 valet key. Being the original owners made this possible.

Even though the transmitter button works, I have elected to not use it. I manually lock the driver side (from the inside) when exiting the car and use the key to open it from the outside upon entering. That is due to the life expectancy of the door lock actuator and having both replaced several years back and the involved process to get that done it works for me.

Those keys are the easiest to spot because they are the big keys with the integrated remote buttons. Those keys are also the only ones that require programming, not necessarily by a dealer, but nowadays its kinda rare to find a automotive locksmith that can program 98-05 Lexus keys. They are more complicated, and require linking to the ecu. If you have a master key (the remote key) you can get this cloned into an aftermarket key, but the last time I checked the OEM keys are discontinued. The key and plastic shell for another Lexus can be used (people use the GS or IS or RX key - I'm not entirely certain which) if your key physically breaks, but the SC3/400 remote insert with chip is extinct (hopefully this is one of the things Lexus will reproduce at some point). The chipped valet key is still available but I don't have the part number on hand.

Read through the thread, good updated info here. But still looking for some clarity...

I have a 2000 Sc400 i bought at a salvage auction where they lost the original key (with the big key and integrated buttons could be used to lock/unlock doors,, etc). The day i picked up the car they had their on site key maker make a key that physically works for the doors, trunk, ignition, and the little lock for the trunk/gas cap under the steering wheel/dashboard area but the buttons on the key itself do nothing (and it doesn't work on the glovebox)

Is there any way to get some keys made that work just like the original factory keys would've worked?
They don't need to be OEM (i guess your saying the oem keys with buttons and chips are discontinued anyways)
But is there an aftermarket replacement that looks oem and can be programmed to work like oem?

I'm not aware of any key codes or anything, I have very little information about the car's history.

On another note, I also have a 1995 sc300 with a one button key that used to work great, but the plastic on the key is physically broken. It seems if I'm understanding this thread correctly, there is more hope to get an OEM or OE equivalent key that functions just like OEM for that car?

Thanks everyone for your input!

if it works on the ignition, that implies that they still have the immob chip which is the hard part to reprogram if lost. as long as the remote and receiver have the same FCC ID, you should be able to use the doorlock piano (lock/unlock sequence) to program in the new key. I made a post where I was able to get it done on my 99SC4 not too long ago, you might be able to find it.
