What size rims do you have on your SC300/400?

I am looking for some rims and don't want to spend alot of money. I've noticed that 17" rims Chrome and SIlver were selling for decent prices. I was just wondering if 17" rims would look too small on our cars or would they look alright?

Technics 10-02-03 06:21 PM

I think it's all your own preference and style.
Supra TT wheels are a good 17" choice.....you can use pretty wide tires with these as well.

RaynArt 10-02-03 07:01 PM

im planning on 17 gs430 wheels but not sure about the tire size to get for those. ive seen some sc's with them but the sidewall was huge.

mrshabo 10-02-03 08:51 PM

19's.. best way to go imo. For looks that is.

17's are too small, unless you are going for that "stock" look with the supra rims.
18's look a little better, are perfect for daily driving, but are still a little too small. IMO it will only look good if the car is slammed.
Because of the size of the car, I think you are better off with going 19's. You can still daily drive on them, if you are willing to pay the hefty price tag for tires.
If you get a bodykit, you should definately look into getting some 20's

Here's a pic of my car on 18's

RaynArt 10-02-03 09:58 PM

as far as looks i agree with 19's, 20's still seem too big for my taste even with a kit. im just goin for a more subtle stock look so i decided on gs rims i mentioned earlier, still not sure what sized tire to go for. so far im still thinkin 235/45

jet864 10-02-03 10:27 PM

I've seen a lot of guys with 20's on their SC's, and all of them (but Dins for obvious reasons) looks like its on stilts. I think manaray is one of the few to pull off SC+20's and make it look oh-so-good. Search for it, you'll love it.

jewelerz i think you should change your poll to "What size rim looks best on the sc300/400" =). If your deciding what rim you should buy.

jewelerz 10-02-03 11:29 PM

Thats true and I'm definately up for opinions. I just thought that I could get an honest answer from personal experience of what people already have on their car in a like dislike since. I really respect you guys opinions and the bottom line is this.... Is 17" too small of a rim? and from the vibes i get they are too small.

mrshabo 10-02-03 11:43 PM

I think 17's are def too small. I had 17's on my car and they looked puny. SC's are pretty big cars, with low profile tires.. it just won't look right.

NRG 10-03-03 02:44 AM

i think 17" wheels with 50 series tires are perfect for the lexus sc400.
18 is too big, 16 is too small.

one day ill have these rims on my car:

jgbnm 10-03-03 07:56 AM

I have 235/45 ZR17's and think they look fine. Came with the car though and I'd probably still be on stock wheels if they hadn't ... Honestly, I'm not a big fan of big wheels (>18").

I've got a cheap set of 17" on mine right now. The more time goes on I'd love to get a set of HRE 547R in 18" or the stock rims back. I'm kind of wavering between moding the car and restoring it to it's glory days ;) .

verylost 10-03-03 11:03 AM

It depends what you are looking for (looks or performance).

As for me, I have been looking for a good deal on 17's that are 9.5 to 10 wide and will also clear the supra big brakes. My main concern is the 1/4 mile so this is why I choose not to go for 18's.

i think the 19's are good for looks and even work well on the track.

D2-AUTOSPORT 10-03-03 12:21 PM

If you want to be daily driven and reliable these are your best bets

17"
GS400 wheels
Supra Staggered wheels

18"
Staggered wheels (pref 5spoke like MODA R6)

For more looks less utility

19 or 20"

You can guess what size I have, but my car collect dust in the driveway during the week.

SC3s and SC4s look horrible with 20s.... WAY too big... not to mention all the 20s i've seen look like crap... more at home on a SC430 or LS430

tossup between 18s and 19s... 19s look more pimp while 18s give a much better ride and have a far better wheel and tire selection

I agree, if you're more performance-oriented stay with the 18's.

greySC300 10-03-03 02:00 PM

for looks, 18s are just right IMO

for performance, unless you're going to fill that 18" or bigger wheel with brakes, is pointless. there are plenty of 17" tire selections and many 17" wheels can fit the supra brakes as well.

Either way, it's a tossup!
but i went with the 17s

sc4canada 10-03-03 04:07 PM

Hey Lex nice wheels are those 18" GT-Cs?

thanks,
Nick

i think 19's look perfect. 20's are a bit too big, but they can look ok also. 18's are nice, but still too small for the sc. i wish i had money for 19's.

my 18" GT-N's

jewelerz 10-04-03 03:46 PM

Yes, Face 1 18x9 front, Face 1 18x10 rear, Advan AVS Sport 245-40ZR18 front, 285-35ZR18 rear. By the way, caliper clearance is massive (one of the reasons I went with these)....I can literally fit a finger between my TT calipers and the wheel spokes.

awj 10-05-03 11:13 AM

http://www.onlineshowoff.com/images/cars/7319/os2.jpg

Not much clearance here. 18*8.5f - 18*9.5r (275's rub on dips and turns) I think the suspension is a little tired out maybe. Supra wheels stay on for now though.

jewelerz 10-05-03 12:33 PM

I wouldn't think that 18's would have a problem rubbing. Anyone else have a problem with 18's rubbing? Or is that just an isolated case of the rubs with 18's.

I just ordered some 18 x 8.5 Front 18 x 9.5 Rear. What offset do you have ? Because I was planning on 275/35/18 rear and 245/40/18 front.

mrshabo 10-05-03 01:22 PM

hey angel why don't you try going wider? Your car is gonna need all the traction it can get =). 275 really isn't that wide. I have 275's on my 19s and they look pretty thin if you ask me. Try going 285 or 295. Ya might have to roll ya fenders though. Wider tires look so much better and u have a reason so go wide so why not?

rubbing is more of an issue with width and offset than diameter.

I told the shop I ordered them from that the wheels were going on a Supra TT. He told me they would have to be 8.5 up front to clear those stoppers. So I figured he new what was up. I believe the offset is just fine. The rear meats only rub during more "spirited" driving. Perhaps the offset is off - but I would have to measure it because, off hand - I don't know what the exact offset is. Either the previous owner lowered the car (the suspension is stock) or the suspension is tired out is all I figure.

I am going from 225s to 275s! I think that is enough of a jump for me right now :) Plus, I like to get what is recommended for the wheel size, and 275/35 seems to be the way to go.

mrshabo 10-06-03 07:50 AM

yea 35 is good. just get 40 in the front unless you want that aggressive look. With 30's i'm really scared of the potholes here in nyc cause it's so thin.

Angel 10-06-03 02:12 PM

Yep, I ordered my tires today. Toyo Proxes 275/35/18 and 245/40/18. Pictures hopefully coming tomorrow of the new rollers.

Lex Luthor 10-07-03 06:25 AM

What rims Nick

Angel 10-07-03 02:54 PM

You will get to see in approx 4 hours :)

I didn't get them mounted before I had to go to my 2nd job. So they are sitting right now all pretty and waiting ... I will mount them and post pictures tonight, hopefully the pictures come out.
