So i recently purchased an sc400 and when i put it in reverse it runs fine until i hit the brake to stop and it kind of has this slight jolt eveytime i hit the brake it doesn't do it in drive just reverse does anyone know what might be causing this
how many miles? sounds like lower control arm bushings to me, very common these cars and usually go every 150k or so miles depending.
you can get supra lower control arms that have new bushings and a new balljoint that is the best way to go.
you could just replace your bushings in your arms, but you would still have an old ball joint that isn't replaceable, so best to replace whole arm with supra units.
take it to a shop and ask them to check over the lower control arm bushings, and also do look at the driveshaft "donut" and other bits but its probably the control arm especially if you have never changed it before.
mine starting clunking around 120k years back when shifting to reverse and then started to do it more often, the rubber bushings break down with age also so can't just go off mileage.
Most everyone by 150k has changed the original ones out or lived with the clunking. As it gets worse alignment will also start to change on you randomly and can get a wandering feeling at speed etc..
You are usually going forward 95% of the time, so the worn bushings settle in that position. when you go to reverse and brake or turn hard you are bascially forcing the play in the bushing to settle on the opposite side, and over and over again till it clunks all the time.
