Hey everyone, I couldnt find a thread specifically for the different types of Headunit Displays so I decided to make one. This is just for more of cosmetic use for those who are browsing based off style and functionality.
So if anyone wants to post pics of their aftermarket headunit/setup feel free to do so. I myself am particularly looking for a aftermarket display that fits with the OEM feel/style, but has modern features such as connecting to BT for Spotify, YouTube Audio, etc. (Mainly Spotify)
I currently have a Nakamichi OEM setup, but I believe some issue with my audio set up is skewered. So I might just replace the whole system.
Here’s a fairly recent picture of mine. The only changes since this photo was taken are the addition of a little round switch (for custom factory antenna up/down function) above the fold-out cupholder and a different version of the ashtray gauge panel with the DC port moved to the far right side.
The head unit is a Continental CDD-7418UB-ORK. There is a VDO version of this that is exactly the same but with their logo and a blue LCD. Single DIN, physical volume ****, physical tuner ****, combination multi-function and radio preset buttons. CD/AM/FM/Aux-In/Bluetooth Audio/Bluetooth handsfree phone function. Works flawlessly.
Requires a cheap Pac Audio TR4 amplifier turn-on trigger with delay to be added.
The faceplate is Metra single DIN with lower pocket (required some careful marking and trimming with a Dremel for the non-removable face to fit in there cleanly) and the connection to the OEM stereo is with a Beat-Sonic SLA-10B for SC/Soarers using bullet connectors.
It’s a simple, OEM looking and OEM quality head unit that’s a fairly new design. No fancy screen but it’s very tactile and the Bluetooth audio for music and handfree phone use (with external mic) work perfectly.
The below goes back to 2013 of the Pioneer head unit but I obtained a 2012 model as I wanted a “real” volume ****. This unit has BT and works good with my iPhone 7+. The holder above the climate control clamps onto the phone. This unit also has a video port for a backup camera which is housed in the license plate wrap.
With the “bypass” harness employed, this allows for video DVDs to be played while driving but after the initial euphoria that wore out and is almost never exploited (besides it being dangerous and illegal in CA). The unit has a slot for a data chip and your music library can be stored. This is also where image files can be placed so you can customize the startup splash screen.
i believe there is an older thread with various head units depicted but it has been a while since there have been any fresh updates. If I find it, I will post a link in this thread....
I just did this over the weekend. Installed an Alpine headunit. Easy as pie. I think the model is the ilx-w650 or something along those lines. Cheaper model from crutchfield. Works fantastically.
Also wrappedwrapped bits with black brushed aluminum but that's off topic.
