Default Instrument Cluster F

Simply Amazing this situation!!!

I thought I had found a new maintenance home for my 93 SC400 at a Japanese specialist shop in Jacksonville. It is 50 miles from my home but I had written off the dealership and this guy had done some nice work on my engine and steering pump last year.

I had decided to let him start knocking out the smaller items this year. One of the items on my list was repairing the speedo, needles, and light bulbs in the cluster.

I get a call saying that he can not get his outsource shop to get anything right on the cluster and he is done with it. No charge, just come get my car. I pick it up and find that:

1. The speedometer now works fine and is accurate (Contrary to what he told me on the phone)
2. The air bag light stays on now.
3. Many of the back lights are now not operational
4. The cruise control indicator does not work. (However the cruise control works fine)
5. And of course the needles are still not illuminating

Is there a shop that specializes in repairing these clusters that absolutely has the right light bulbs and parts to repair everything.

I am wanting to keep this car. With a rebuilt tranny last year, new steering system and many many seals on the engine replaced, she is in prime driving condition. It is simply a matter of knocking out the little irritants now.

This usually happens when the instrument cluster isn't plugged in and the key is turned to the acc position, you will have to clear the error code that is signaled to the ecm. To do this is simple:

Locate either of the two diagnostic ports in your car. One is attached to the engine block, and the other is underneath the driver dash by the auxiliary fuse box. There should be a black plastic cover labelled 'Diagnostic' or 'DLC2'. The following procedure must be performed perfectly in order to work...

--Stick a wire or paper clip in the Tc & E1 pinholes of the DLC2.

----To clear the code connect two wires to Tc and AB of the DLC2.
-----Turn the ignition to ACC or ON and wait approximately 6 seconds.
------Start with the Tc terminal and apply a wire to body ground alternately to Tc and AB twice each in cycles of 0.5 - 1.0 seconds.
-------Finally keep Tc to ground. If the clearing is done properly, then the airbag light will blink in 50ms increments continuously. If it did not, then you didn't ground the Tc and AB properly. Repeat the process. The procedure may take between 3 to 15 attempts to work.

If I'm not mistaken they are polarity based, meaning he could have put the bulbs back clocked in the wrong position. Not 100% sure as its been years since I had to repair my tach motor and replace some lights. Maybe someone else can chime in.

They are bulbs. There is no polarity. The bulbs fail when disconnected from power due to the age of the filament. Normally a very tiny current exists in them to keep them alive. Go outside and turn the dash on and smack the dash above the cluster a few good times to excite the filament. If they aren't too far gone they will refire.
