egr problem help

i had engine trouble code 71 come up. im definate that its egr. what i want to know do i really need the egr valve or can i bypass the whole thing and how?

I had code 71 pop up on my '95 SC300. My mechanic cleaned the EGR valve, and it went away. I don't know the details on how he cleaned it, but it wasn't expensive.
