egr is exhaust gas recirculation, it is a pollution control device.
Emissions systems are required by federal law to carry a transferrable warranty that's longer than the new car warranty - you might want to take it to a dealer at least to get it diagnosed for sure - some of the cost might be covered by warranty - but it's a '92 so unless it's really low miles that warranty may be used up too.
The egr system is made up of a relay, a step motor and a gas temp sensor. It is controlled by the engine ecu.
