Hi, I have a Soarer with the R154 and 1JZ twin turbo engine. My car doesn't drive anymore, Driveshaft spins but diff makes loud clunking noises so I would like to adress it ASAP.
what type of diff can I fit Under my soarer?
I heard SC400 diffs are direct bolt-ons but I need to be sure. I don't care about LSD open or whatever right now I just need it back on the roads and driving!
whichever cheapest diff I can get, I'll get it! Also I want it to be a direct bolt-on, no complications or whatnot, since I have a Soarer, the R154's driveshaft is different compared to MK3 supras and SC300 manuals.

Uh,if you can get a picture of the flange on the diff, you can then compare which diff you can use.

If you are in this kind of an emergency I would recommend finding an early SC400 differential (3.92:1 ratio) or SC300 5-speed differential (4.083:1 ratio) or a 92-95 GS300 differential (4.083:1 BUT requires the Soarer companion flange to be swapped over. All of those diffs are non-LSD but you don't care right now.

Your Soarer, being an original R154 manual 1JZ car, has a 4.083:1 differential (could be LSD or Open depending on how it was ordered).

Any of the above diffs will allow the car to get back on the road while you take your Soarer diff to a good shop that works on differentials to sort out the issue or possibly rebuild it.

As for your driveshaft you will probably have something that *looks* slim like an SC300 5-speed front shaft but clearly isn't the same thing. Regardless, the diffs with the SC companion flange should bolt up and be identical to the Soarer versions. It's the Supra and GS companion flanges that must be swapped out in order to use those diffs (for example: doing a Supra TT Auto LSD diff swap requires this).

Hope it's not as bad as it sounds. Get your original diff diagnosed. You likely do have a Torsen T-2 LSD in there so it's worth getting it serviced.

the companion flange, does it come with the diff or I have to find one as well?
I'd really just like to buy a whole new pumpkin assembly and just bolt it up, if I need a companion flange then I'll have to look around more..

 

also my soarer is a plain old open diff 4.08

 

you can use any of those diffs, If the output or campanion flange on the new diff does not look the same and won't bolt to your driveshaft, you can just take the companion flange off your old diff and bolt it to the new one, its a straight swap just the front flange. then it should bolt up to the driveshaft. I don't think the diff's are different lengths so no need to change the drive shaft I would think if you swap out the font flange. count the number of turns to take it off and reinstall with the same amount of turns to keep the pre-load in the right ballpark on the big nut on the flange.
