Default 9005 HID interchangable with 9006

I have some left over HID kit stuff laying around and was wondering if I could fit a 9006 bulb into the 9005 high beams into my SC? I tried putting the bulb in but it won't go in completely to turn and lock it into position. I have looked online and seen people say mixed things about 9006/9005 hid bulbs being the same bulb but before I buy new 9005 hid bulbs, I wanted to see if I should be able to fit these left over 9006 bulbs in the high beam housing first. Has anyone else tried this? I looked at the bulb base for 9006 HID bulb and 9005 halogen bulb and they look pretty identical in terms of size.

Yes, they can be used. I forgot how exactly but when I had my rx7 guys would recommend switching to the 55w vs the 35w (unsure which is which and I went with hids instead). I believe it was as simple as thinning one tab and upgrading the wires. I'm sure a google search would find a how too.

Ok I searched and found it. The 9005 is the upgrade from 9006. It's a direct fit swap. However as I reread your post I realized you said high beams. I strongly advise against using HiDs in high beams. You will not be able to use them in a pinch, hids require 30 seconds warm up time and I'm afraid that is inadequate as the lows will be off for a few seconds and you could crash. Additionally it is illegal to put hids in reflector housings.

Good luck hope I helped

Well, I went ahead and just ordered another set of 9005 hid bulbs instead of trying to make the left over 9006 bulbs I had laying around fit in the high beam housing. It seems as though the 9006 bulb base is a little thicker than the 9005 housing allows for, hence the reason why I'm unable to get the bulb to lock into position. As for HIDs being illegal in reflector housing and all that, I'm aware but I have my beams aimed correctly and in theory putting HIDs in any vehicle that didn't come from the factory with or without projectors is technically illegal. I just wanted to put the left over HID parts I had laying around to use mainly for looks, not to actually rely on the high beams to use on and off constantly like most people do; I barely ever use my high beams anyway so no big deal. I just hope the 9005 bulbs I ordered just now actually fit compared to the 9006 ones I was trying earlier, even though they do look remarkably similar. Also, on the SC, the low beams do not turn off when you use the high beams as far as I can tell since they are separate housings and bulbs being used. At least on my car it doesn't, everything stays lit while using high beams.
