Default How did you select your turbo

How did you select your turbo? Im trying to figure out what turbo to go with, and its hard to begin to decide with all the different companies and all the different sizes.
So im asking how did you guys start your turbo hunt?

This is a very informative and recent thread on the subject:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/per...urbo-math.html

As for me, my selection begins and ends with emissions so there is only one (two) turbo(s) I will use. Although even those can be upgraded for a small fortune.

^ I can't possibly see how emissions has anything to do with selection. Before I left BL I sent a 97 anniversary tt mk4 out the door with a stroker and 7175, made 930whp with a gorgeous powerband, and passed state inspection no problem due to hks FCON ecu (piggy back) and a tune by Justin Nenni.

OP, what's your power goal, what's your budget, what do you already have in place?

I actually have read that post, and it helped, but that is when you know what size turbo and all that stuff to see if it is efficient. id rather not spend days reading through compression graphs...

I haven't started modifying yet.
I will do the upgrades necessary based on the turbo selection. (r154, exhaust, injections, fuel system, brakes, etc)
Im looking for around 600 whp on e85, probably will be spending 7k or so
Ive gone through a lot of build threads, but with turbo technology changing and new advances, I want to try to get a newer designed turbo.

If money is no object, you could look into a bw efr. Keep in mind that the newest, most advanced turbos (like the efr) have been suffering teething issues. Lots of people love the precisions for spool and power. Another good option IMO is the bw s300 series. It's what I bought because it is pretty damn close to a gt35r in performance and at a fraction of the cost.

For your power level, an s362 bw would work. If you want to try an efr, look into an 8374.

I have no clue about precisions or other brand turbos, so maybe someone else will chime in and help. Good luck with your project!

I'd stay away from the efr, but one of the regular Borg Warner's would be nice with a good tial gate. Quick on here could prob tell you best one for your app. I'd seriously recommend getting some 264s, full 4" exh and something like twin aeromotive stealths or aem pumps, dual feed rail and good regulator, id1000s and a good clutch.

They should make a turbocharger dartboard with all different kinds of turbo's for supra's. what a timesaver that would be.

I use a big one

Sorry OP had to do it.
But my vote is for BW but disagree with Vrank on fuel pumps I'd use Walbro 485 pumps.

^ haha big, bigger, biggest for the dart board. Yeah the 400 walbro is alright. I have one in my car right now. I know some folks that have had good success with the ones I mentioned, and they're quicker for me to install since they don't have the awkward bell shape down at the bottom. I usually make a little holder contoured to the walbros to keep them in place on the hangar. The 3/8" barb on the walbro is nice.

It does when in California the absolute letter of the law has far more weight than intelligence and common sense-- meaning selection is then limited to factory and GT28 upgrades :/

In other circumstances, no, it doesn't have much of anything to do with a purely mathematical selection process.

what engine ? 2jz or 1jz?

600whp is easy with the right combo.. S366 is a great turbo but , the S362/363 is the best Turbo for 600hp on Ethanol.
S363 will max out around 700whp on Ethanol with cams on 2jz.

S366 will max out ~800whp -/+ again depending on alot of things CR, fuel , camshafts etc..

bw uses a mormon flange on the back on the S300 line up and the you have 2 options on the AR from the box units .88 non divided and .91 divided. i always get the .91 with a divided manifold.

I took my s366 off for 4202 and I loved my S366 but just got tired of how it came ON and i wanted to make 800whp on Ethanol and i knew it would make some crazy tq#s and I didn't wanna build another block since my rods will be on borrow time at those tq level.

But let me tell you that 4202 is a laggy b&&* lol , i am talking about being in 3rd and smash the gas at 3rpm and there is nothing lol i mean nothing but you just have have to know how to drive it and you will love it.
1st gear i get 21psi ~4-4100rpm , after that it's all cake .

^^^^The best part about the mormon flange is that you can run more than one downpipe
