Impreza VS SC400?
Ok I really cant phrase this topic. but out of my two cars I am wanting to take the lexus to be more comfortable in my 400 mile trip.
I have a 1993 Subaru Impreza, 4EAT FWD that gets like 30MPG but it only has 100HP max.
and then I have my 1993 Lexus SC400 stock that runs great.
The trip I will be taking up north has uphill on mountains and will carry me my girlfriend and two kids in the back, with luggage and food, so all that extra weight I just see making the Impreza struggle and lose gas mileage.
I am just wondering if it makes sense gas mileage wise to take the lexus, since it wont struggle as much.

40 miles is my daily commute, that's not much of a trip lol. How old are the kids? As you know, luggage space will be a factor. I've taken my SC on one trip and it was ok but I'll probably never do it again. The cabin area gets screaming hot for some reason and I just can't seam to relax while driving it.

I missed a 0, I mean 400 miles, 189 one way
and their ages are 8 and 9
My SC manages around 22 mpg highway when driven spiritedly. Its biggest drawback is the 4spd auto just doesn't have a deep cruising gear like newer cars do. This is most apparent on the interstate; 2-lane highways are fine.
Even my 2000 Continental (~300hp with mods) gets 24+ mpg highway and it has room for everybody!

OP, between those two cars I'd STILL take the SC400 on mountain roads over an older FWD automatic Impreza 2.2L. I've taken my SC on camping trips, road trips, long trips involving a lot of mountain driving and one cross-country trip. In all cases it's both fun, comfortable to drive and has plenty of space for luggage. Unless 20mpg average bothers you it's an excellent all around traveling vehicle. The SC's gas tank is 19.6gal. Pretty big.
Still, even if the prospect of 30mpg sounds better, your other choice is the earliest and most pedestrian Impreza design. It will get the job done but I think you'd enjoy the SC400 on your trip far more.
Which is more important to you? Ultimate fuel economy, a fold down rear seat and at the cost of an average driving experience... or average/so-so fuel economy with a nice chassis for mountain roads and most of the interior volume you'll need for a trip but not quite as much interior space as the Subaru?

sc...I had a 93 n/a eclipse(fwd with 93 hp at the crank) and uphill sucked. with extra weight, it sucked more. Youll wanna use the ac, the car is barely gonna move. about 100 miles in youll waanna kill yourself and your mpg wont be any better than the sc due to keeping the pedal floored at the lowest possiblegear.
Maybe its time to buy a decent daily driver with great mpg, if this is a regular thing. If its only once in a while fak it... I drive my f150 400 miles round trip every once in a while.
better yet build decent pre runner and take the shortest route! thats always the funnest!!!
