Question air conditioner

Greetings all:
Just had my 93 sc400 service @90k. The car seems to be running like it's brand new. I got a new timing belt, pulleys, belt tensioner, valve adj, spark plugs wires, etc. Besides the cost the only thing I can complain about is the AC check they did. The ac wasn't cooling that well, so they did a check as part of the service. They come back and tell me the freon is low. They want an additional $250 just to charge the system and check it out fully charge. Does anyone know where I can have my system charged for less?If there's a problem with the system I need to have it solve, because I do have any extended warranty, and it does cover some of the ac parts. Oh I live in northern ca, san pablo, to be exact.

thx,
aj

Last time I was at my local parts store I noticed they had freon charge kits for about $75, the kit came with freon and everything you needed to charge it.

I am pretty sure it is illigal for anyone business to charge your car w/ R-12 (94 had CFC free AC pre had non CFC free). I had to retrofit my AC to R-134a, costed me about 600 Canadian. If you know anyone in any sort of business a friend, he might be willing to charge your car for you. Or if you live by mexico I think you can get R-12 from there no problem.

Default AC

FROM WHAT THE LEXUS DEALER TOLD ME, THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD CHARGE THE SYSTEM, AND THEN CHECK FOR ANY LEAKS, ETC. ALL FOR ABOUT $250. WE BOTH HAVE 93'S AND THE MECH SAID THE NEW STUFF WOULD RUIN MY HOSES.

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead but since I am looking into getting an SC one thing that has slowed down my progress in owning one is the ac issue. I am considering buying an older SC for cheap and doing a few things to it. The cars I have considered are all either 92s or 93s. My question is similiar to above. I have heard that if you are pre 95 (or maybe 94) that it is impossible to just "refill" the ac because as explained above, it is illegal to get that stuff. I have also heard as mentioned aboved that you can convert over to a post 94 ac system but I thought I read that every little component down to the hoses and lines would have to be replaced. Does anyone know more about this and what the cost is so that I can figure this into the cost of the car equation. Or can someone at least tell me what would definately need to be changed out so I can maybe try to score it off ebay or something.

Don't use those, those are a sure-fire way to kill a AC system.

I had mine switched over to R-134, it was $160. I bought a new dryer, oil, and O-rings, and had a pro recharge the system.

nope, R-12 and R-134a barrier hoses have almost the same rate of molecular loss through them. It's the oil in the death kits that will kill them, they have methylene chloride in that oil. it swells the rubber parts up, and it may cause damage to your whole syste,.

No problem dude, I have had my own a/c problems so you'll probably see lots of posts from me...still haven't fixed it yet, but it's getting cold now so I'll deal with the a/c system in a couple of months.
