So im hearing some conflicting information from a couple of different people. When swapping an r154 does the trans tunnel need to be modified? From what Ive read in the diy section it should be a pretty much straight swap granted i have the shifter extension, bell housing ,etc.
No modifications need, just get the right trans mount. And shifter extension which is less thn 200 bucks from toyota.

some people cut the hole in the trans tunnel to save money if they got a soarer swap 5 speed with the swan necked shifter.
the extention serves people best who have automatic cars i think so they dont have to cut the tunnel.

You really don't even need to go to a Toyota dealership to buy a shifter extension.
I bought my R154 swap from fellow member 97BlkSC300 years ago and what he did is cut the shifter and welded on an extra piece so the shifter sits back in the proper spot.
I think that would be alot cheaper than spending $200.

I paid like $135.00 total for both pieces from Champion, when they had them in stock 2 years agos. Call them up and see if they still have them in stock.
Sorry, the guys are right about modifying, but if I had a choice of getting a quality part and a good price. I am going that route first. Cutting, hacking and welding is not my thing.
If the guy can "hack" and weld, it will cost him pennies. Not like anyone even sees that part anyhow. So what's the point in spending close to $200 for it? If he is starting with an Auto chassis his SC will already need to be "hacked" because you need to cut a hole in the upper section of tunnel.

I am going the modding route, my question is, can you install the shifter in place and put the motor and tranny together? In other words, do you have to install the shifter last after the motor and tranny in placed in position?

It is a lot easier to install the shifter last it gives you more clearance. It is only held on by 4 bolts anyways.

sc300jz, I have gotten conflicting stories about the cutting of tunnel. I have been led to believe that you dont have to, IF you extend the shifter by this means above or by buying the extended shifter assembly. I havent gotten this far along in my project, so I dont know? If you have to cut, then how much forward of the stock cut in already? I also read other threads that you should wait to cut due to every car and install is different. We need to be clear on this, before misleading everyone.. :-) I want to know!
