i.e. getting a new tachometer light, b/c the bulb is burned out, gotta buy a whole new thing for a good 500 bucks.

Just curious but did you try fixing it any other way, or did you just splurge for a brand new one? There's a shop in Palo Alto, CA that I've taken my instrument cluster to, and they can pretty much do anything to any cluster.

Before you buy a new one give the top of the dash a few wacks and see if the light will turn on.

 

Actually, those lights are replaceable. I don't know if you can order it the light bulbs seperately but you can also check some electronic stores...
