I meant ask questions of importers just because they say they have a certain one...doesn't mean they don't have Soarers too
As long as you know the right questions to ask you can determine whether it's the right one or not.

Inevitably, there will be a day when the JDM 1/2JZ stores are depleted... I don't think we're close to that point yet. (I hope not)
Why not pick up a 1JZ-VVTi instead? They're definitely going to be newer and easier to find. Sure, it's a tiny bit more expensive but you're paying for the fact that the engine should be in better shape than a regular old-school 1J. Wiring has also been figured out for the most part.

Thanks for the heads up suprahmki, yeah I actually found a company that only had a supra jz listed I called and they have a soarer jz also. So your right! Thanks.
I'd love a vvti but the 5spd is pretty limited out there. But your right it is a couple hundred more but worth it. If I come across a 5spd vvti I will definitely take it into consideration.
I'm sure going vvti route I'd have to source a rear sump and extended shifter housing. I have a sc300 by the way.

Yeah but my car came with no motor thanks though... Are pans for vvti and regular 1jz the same? Reason I ask is cause if I got a reg 1jz and later wanted a vvti could I just swap oil pans? They are prob different but I don't know for sure..

Some engine distributors still price VVTi engines like they did a few years ago when nobody knew how to wire them up... making them virtually useless. At that time, more people bought non-VVTi motors which drove the price of VVTi motors down (or kept them from getting higher).
If you could score a VVTi engine cheaper than a non-VVTi, you should totally jump on it. VVTi motors will become more sought after in the future and non-VVTi motors will take a hit in pricing (this has already been reflected). I think 2JZ VVTi motors, however, are still cheaper than their non-VVTi counterpart.
As for the oil pan issue, I believe that non-VVTi oil pans should work with VVTi engines. Don't quote me on that though. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Great info thanks guys!!!
I sourced a supra r154.. Not cheap by any means, but worth it.. So now that the most important aspect of my jz swap is out the way, I gotta source a motor and your right vvti's are dirt cheap
