Burning smell?

Burning smell?
Hi:
1992 SC400, 400,000 km.
There was a popping noise and electrical smell coming form the rear deck area. I removed the trunk trim to expose the gas tank and three rear speakers, but no charing or heat apparent anywhere.
The speakers are original. Have I "burned out" one of them?
Got my wife's attention really quickly. Opinions?
