I need a new MAF sensor for my 93 SC 300. There are only nine new ones in the USA. The price is $900. Why would Lexus do that? Are they really just interested in making me buy a new car? I love my SC. I think that these are one of the most beautiful cars ever made and I want to keep mine forever. I can't do that if Lexus is going to charge ridiculous prices for one of a kind electronic parts.
I found a used one off a car in a scrapyard and had to pay $100, but that one will eventually fail as well. Then what? Has anyone else experienced this? I am thinking twice about my philosophy of keeping this car forever and rebuilding it piece by piece as needed.

Everything from dealer is expensive, its not only Lexus
Factory OEM is $$$ you gotta have the money to pay for it. Just get a used one it'll save you from the $ heart attack. I'm sure it won't fail for years

Pole Position
The newest SC300 is 11 years old. Most car brands stop producing parts for cars once they hit 10 years out of production. Mainly because by the 10 year mark, no one is willing to shell out the cash to buy new parts and there are infinite cars in scrap yards by then. It just isn't feasible to Lexus (or any other manufacturer) to keep producing parts for an obsolete car.
call up a toyota dealership and see what the price is for a maf from a non turbo supra 93-95 (wont be cheap but it might not be 900)

Your car is two decades old. In 2000 it was pretty hard to walk into a Ford dealership and order a carburetor for a 1980 Ford Pinto.
Is this a serious question?

You want stock for both vehicles ON PRODUCTION and on the shelf, yeah?

Go to www.car-part.com and you'll find a couple hundred at scrap yards for as low as $25.
Or you can google it and find new/refurbished ones for cheap.

the dealer is exploiting its customers---plain and simple

Supply and demand dude, basic economics. The cost of their supply hasn't changed, those parts were likely $900 when the car was new, who should they drop the prices? That $900 part is STILL a $900 part. There is still some demand, and there is limited supply. They're going to keep prices for that steady most likely, if anything they could go up. Hardly an exploitation.Originally Posted by 1WILLY1

Dealerships also want $10k for a new 1UZ but nobody buys 'em because you can just rebuild it. You can also do that with a MAF. They usually just need a good cleaning. Just think of it like the volume **** on our cars, they get dirty and don't tranmit a signal properly. I've taken apart and cleaned a couple Toyota "swinging door" style MAFs and it's not that hard to do.

Just so you know, that is the list price. You can get one from an online dealership (like Pembroke Pines Lexus) for $675. Still an arm and a leg, but much less than the $900 list price.Originally Posted by Heyfever
