I have torn down my W58 and it has a 3 piece syncro design on 2nd and 3rd. I was looking through the diagrams on Sewell trying to figure out what it would cost me to order some of this stuff piecemeal, and noticed that Sewell sells what looks to be a single piece syncro, like the ones used on 1st and 4th.
The exploded diagram looks like a single syncro ring, but it has a funny part number with a letter at the end. Maybe its an assembly consisting of all 3 pieces?
Here is the diagram with syncros circled:
Maybe they sell the multi-piece syncro as an assembly and only specify one part number for it, but I suspect that they only list a single piece syncro, and perhaps the early W58 used this design?
Has anyone been into both an early and late design W58? Did they have different syncro types? Where the heck can I source the 3 piece syncros, and does anyone have an exploded view with part numbers?
toyota reuses some diagrams, sometimes they are not 100% accurate from year to year.
If your local toyota has it in stock you can go and look at it before you buy it.
If they have to order it though, then you can't look at it before paying, you probably know that though.
I have an email into driftmotion asking them what type syncros their w58 kit comes with. It is for sure R154 time, but I added up all the parts I need to finish the R154 swap, and it's a little over $1200. I just dont have that kind of money right now.
I may just fix the speedo gear issue that prompted me to crack this trans open and move on. Sucks being broke and having an R154 sitting in the floor taunting me
i see, yeah thats unfortunate its a costly process i will have to start myself next year.
I wouldn't waste any more time or money on the W58 until someone finds a way to rebuild them to handle some real power. maybe the Australian forums may have some more info, I hear they like to keep their w58's around a bit longer than we do, especially mated to the v8's.
Yeah I just said screw it and ordered the speedo drive gear clip. I'm going to put it back together and just deal with it until money becomes available again. I hate to sink money into the W58 after all.
Driftmotion told me that the 3 piece syncro kit is $150 MORE than the single piece EARLY style syncro kit. So, needless to say, at $360 for the kit, there is no way I can justify rebuilding the W58.
