Seems like I just can't get a straight answer from anywhere.
What is the Stock/OEM differential in a 1997 SC300 (5-spd)? Is it a Torsen, like in the Soarer? Or is it some non-TBD, non-LSD open diff?

All SC's here in the U.S (Be it 5spd/AT 300 or 400) from '92-'00 all came with open differentials.

 

Open diff, SC's never got the limited-slip option.

 

What are the ratio's?

 

the 5speed is a 4.08 i believe, im not sure if the auto is the same

I like LSD's. But in more into drifting and like it when it grabs. Considering TRD made theirs a limited slip, I would go with that.

 

92-97 5-spd's got the 4.083:1 ring & pinion
92-00 auto's got the 4.272:1 ring & pinion

SC's were never offered with a factory installed LSD in the US.




The MK4 Supra community regularly removes the OEM Torsen LSD to replace it with the Clutch-type TRD LSD. The clutch-type LSD is a lot more predictable and stable, and doesn't get twitchy at high HP levels like a Torsen does.

TRD, Kaaz, Carbonetic & OS Giken, all make an outstanding diff. Can't go wrong.

If you're into road racing, everything I've read points at the OS Giken being ideal for all the ways you can tweak & tune it. If you just need good traction lockup for street/driving purposes, the TRD or Kaaz 2-way are awesome.

You picked the wrong car if you think spending around a grand to have LSD is too much.

No such thing as a gs400 LSD.

 

^^ This. Generally a Torsen LSD in a 3.769 pumpkin goes for $1k. A TRD 2-way that requires installation is $1k or so. Rarely I see bare TT Auto or Soarer T-2 Torsens for around $650-$800 that also require installation. It's comparable to what most other cars have as NEW aftermarket LSD options which are often starting at $1,000 and go to an average of $1,800 or more. Pick any popular performance chassis and price out a Quaife, OEM Torsen, or clutch types like Kaaz or semi-clutch types like an OS Giken. The prices are up there with few exceptions.

Getting any type of LSD installed in an SC or Supra differential shouldn't be a big sweat. I got mine installed with new shims and bearings for $350 from a reputable specialist. Well worth it considering how old these things are becoming.

Also, comments above by Wreckless about about different types of LSD's and their most advantageous uses are spot on.

 

The least expensive ways to go is TT auto diff, it should drop right in with your existing ring gear. I think I read that on sf somewhere while back.. I scored this low mileage one on ebAy while back from Titan Motorsports almost next to nothing haven't found a reputable shop to drop it in.

 

TRD auto LSD is $1280 , you need 2 bearing $70 , 2 orings $10 and the rtv.

TRD lsd is stronger and when it breaks it still keep both wheels spinning and track straight and with the torsen you will be all over the place...

 

You sure that's not a 6 speed diff? If so it will not work with your ring gear.
