Default Transmission died

I have a 92 SC400 with like 175,000. Auto trans. Just bought the car a few weeks ago and I would shift into drive really hard. I drove it like this with regular highway and some moderate city driving since late Aug. and it was fine. Last night I get off 94 and when rusume driving from the light I stopped at, the RPM's climbed to ~3500 before shifting. Then at the next light, it didnt shift onto drive, or any gear on the shifter, at all. The car would sit there and rev as if it were in neutral. I checked the fluid and it had some in there, there was at least 2 in. of fluid on the dipstick.

But when I turned it off and back on, it would work again. It was only a short period of time, like 5 min, before it went out again. And when it did go out i noticed it was slipping 1st, then 2nd, then it felt like 3rd and 4th just crap out.

Wtf is wrong with it? I know I'm going to take it in, but how bad is it...?

Thanks ya'll

wow i hope i dont need to swap the tranny, im too poor for that right now. Is the Sc300 and 400 auto trans the same btw...?

Also, last night when this happened, I drove from a cold start after it was freezing. I know cause there was ice on my car. Does the freezing/cold temp have anything to do with it?

You'll problly have to swap a tranny. Drain then fill the trans fluid first. If that doesn't help then start looking for a trans. Any Sc from 92-95 trans will fit. Any LS trans from 91-95 will fit. The gearing is longer and the speed sensor from the Sc will need to be swaped. That's all. Everything bolts up. If you have $1500 and sometime research a manual swap. It's pretty easy. Search around.

something broke loose in the VB and it's clogging the fluid passages.
you revving it prob killed the clutch packs too.

if the fluid change does nothing then it's time for another tranny.

Thanks you guys, I love this forum. I'll probably stick with a replacement auto for the 400. But does anyone have any input on getting mine rebuilt vs. getting one from like car-parts.com and replacing it? which is cheaper an/or more reliable?

Thanks again

I didn't read everyone's posts, all i saw was the first few people talking about swaps. Anywho, I had a similar problem with mine a couple years ago and it was the clutch packs. I just bought a transmission from a junk yard for $550 and paid a show another $450 to put it in. Can't remember if I got a new torque converter or not (although I hope I did). In hind sight I do wish I had done the W58 swap, though.

I wish I had the convenience to do the swap. although I guarantee I'd speed more than I already do ha. I found a member on here who can hook me up with a very low mileage rebuilt trans and my mechanic will switch it out for like $300. It's probably gonna cost me $600 which is what I wanted to spend on other expenses for the car, but I guess that's what happens with a car. You win some, you lose more hahaha

Thanks for all your guys' help.
