Default HIDs are Illegal ???

I have been reading that aftermarket HIDs are illegal...

Anyone had to deal with the cops for this reason, I'm curious because I want to install the strongest ones I can find that wont damage the car...

Any advice would be appreciated

Not really our cars come with projectors, hids still give it an OEM look, you wont be bothered. Some of these ricers I see that have em in regular headlights looks awful and scatters the light, they might have problems.

so, yes, they are.
you gonna get busted? depends on how stupid you are.
the primary thing to look at is the color temp (the part that gets most busted), 6200k is about as high as you will safely want to go, and not get complaints (or worse).
also, how they are aimed/installed is important, too, to keep from trouble.

I would get an HID kit from hidextra.com. It's $60, but it's a legit site and they're kits are really good.

As for illegal HID's, only 10000k and higher HID's will get you pulled over. 8000k and lower is legal. For the brightest HID's, go with 4300k since it is pure white and offers the best light output. 6000k is also good, but it has a slight blue tint. Anything higher than 8000k will reduce your ability to see at night.

The only HID's that usually do damage to your car are HID kits that run at 55w instead of the usual 35w. Cheap ebay HID kits can also damage your headlights. 55w HID's offer brighter light output, but some cars can't withstand the heat and it causes damage to the wiring.

I've been told by a cop that since my SC didn't come with HIDs out of the factory, having one is illegal. And gave me a ticket.

Anyways, to answer your questions..

Stick with 35w to avoid melt down of wires. Remember that higher temp such as 10,000K does NOT mean higher/stronger output. Go with 4300K if you want least trouble with cops. It'll have the closest OEM appearance and you'll have least tendency to be pulled over.

Most first time HID shoppers will almost always ignore the advise and buy the higher temp bulb for "JDM tyte blue" appearance. So keep this in mind. Higher temp means higher chance to get pulled over when shopping for HID kits.

uras300 sounds about right. I was told the same thing. If the car didn't come with it as an option from the dealer, you can't add it.

technically they are illegal since our cars didnt come with hids from the factory, but just use the advice that the others are saying about the color temps 4300k-8000k. i have them in my sc(8000k 55w) and have never had any trouble, i guess since its a lexus and has projector lens it seems factory..and if you do get pulled over about them just say "hey its a lexus this is factory man"

Anything more than [true] 6000k will be a lot more noticeable to the cops.

If you want to go with HID, then you need to get a ballast to go along with it. You can buy HID kits that fit 9006 bulb housing. DDM Tuning has some affordable sets that is probably good enough for you.

HID's are illegal on cars that did not come with them. Anything over 5000K is illegal according to the DOT. I believe 4100K is standard and what the DOT approves as "White" light, and they approve 5000K replacements to match your aging original HID headlights. Getting busted for illegal HID's is just up to the cop and if he wants to bother with it or not. That said I've been running HID kits in my cars that didn't have them since 1999/2000 and ever got pulled over, however, I have to put my halogen lights back in to pass my annual safety inspection.
