Default Help with first Lexus purchase

Hello all,

I'm in the market for a used SC300 within the next week or two. I'm curious as to what, if any, differences were between the 92-96 era. Also, what causes the price jump for the 97's.

I'm currently located around Philadelphia and I've run across a 92 black w/ 5 speed in the chicago area. 40,600 miles and the owner is asking $13,500. The car was bought as a 'learner' for a manual transmission. After the stock clutch failed, it was recently replace w/ factory clutch from the dealership. The only other thing that I know is wrong is a dime sized rust spot on the roof of the car and the A/C smells like mildew.

I've spent countless hours searching and researching information concerning the SC300, both on this forum and supraforums.com, so I finally gave in and would really like some input on what everybody thought. Also, the purpose of this car would be to transplant the 2jz-gte w/ getrag 6 speed at a later date. I'm not so concerned with the cost/details of that issue as of yet, just initial purchase at hand.

Any advice will be appreciated!

Only differences on teh SC 300 were cosmetic and a lil more standard options.
92-94
95-96 lower diff grill, rear lights
97+ added chrome grill and side skirts, diff lights.

Oh yeah, WELCOME TO CLUBLEXUS!!!

Uhh.....ummm....nooo.

Anyway, I'm in King of Prussia at the moment. Just moved a couple weeks ago. Not knowing very many people, my weekends are pretty laid back at the moment, so hanging out sometime will work for me.

Get it, 13k seems like a fair price for low miles SC, but if you're swapping out the motor maybe you should settle for high milage SC which will be much cheaper.

Differences are:
96 and up have an OBDII computer
93 and up have passenger air bags
93 and up have one push driver side windows open
96 and up have a separate remote for access with trunk access
94 and up have R134a refrigerant
96 and up have a one push moon roof opener
Different bumpers and sideskirts in years 92-94,95-96,97up

I would say $11000 max since it is a learner car and has been thrashed around. Look at the interior REAL close as well as all the instrumentation. These are the things that will haunt you the most. Also turn on the blinkers and look to see if there are voltage spikes across the system. I would say that for the musty smell that you check the AC filter but the filters were only on 93 and up according to Lexus dealers. It may just be that it has not been used in a while. One car I bought had a musty smell for the first week I had it but I kept the AC on always and the smell went away.

THis forum is a wealth of information. Use the search function. Most likely all your questions have been addressed in a previous thread. Go Toyomoto for the older SCs or try Swift Racings kit for the VVTi versions.

Most of all, welcome to CL.

Whatever dealership told u that, they r wrong. My 92 (and all the others) have an A/C filter. To access it, u have to go through tthe glove box.

If i were u, Jerry, I would try to find a 5spd. w/ higher mileage. If u don't want to/can't, try to lower the price down b/c it was a "learners" car. Also, check to see that the pwr. steering pump has NO leaks. This is a common problem in the SC's and if it isn't caught right away, it will lead to serious $$$ repairs (new alternator and pump). Hope everything works out and WELCOME TO CLUBLEXUS.

BTW: silver00psike: WTF. Please don't ever use that term "butt buddies" again

Thanks for clarifying some things up for me. The reason for wanting a lower mileage car would be for the benefit of the interior and exterior...not so much the drivetrain. I think I'm going to pass on that one in Chicago after all. I need to find one a little closer that had granny riding around in it for a few years. I'm not in any hurry and I still have my supra to run around in, so if anything comes up as a 'helluva' deal, then I'll jump.

As far as the years go, sounds like a 95 would be prime, though if I went later years the ODBII wouldn't really matter if I switched the engine/tranny with a 96 or earlier mkiv and ecu. The ideas are brewing...

Thanks for the welcoming!

I know of a few places that fix cars that have been in an accident. THey buy them in thosea auctions. He says I can get an sc400 for about 4k and fix it for 1.5k or 1k.

speaking of fixing cars, i'm not sure how it is in my area versus yours, but in genereal, do toyota dealerships service lexus just as well as actual lexus dealerships? any info would be great.

Every Toyota dealership I have been to has refused to do service on Lexus cars. They probably have a policy to make sure you get ripped off with inflated Lexus dealership prices. In Concord, CA the labor rate is $110/hr and they were saying how excited I should be because their rate is so competitive.

excited? hahah. i am guessing labor prices in california are somewhat inflated compared to out east (and i may be wrong about that), but around here even Balise Lexus in West Springfield (biggest lexus dealer around) charges at the MOST $80/hour...might only be $75....toyota gets $70/hour, and my local import mechanic gets $55.
