Default Door Handle doesn't work (an unexpected reason)

A month ago my passenger side door handle stopped working. It worked just fine from the inside, but from the outside it would not open. I browsed the forums and found this:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...iy-w-pics.html

This seemed pretty reasonable to me, and I had fixed a door on another car that did broke in a similar way last year. So I started to take the door apart, when much to my amazement , I pulled out the actuator arm with the plastic clip. This was the actuator arm that connects the door handle to the latch. It was just sitting in the bottom of the door frame. (it was not the smaller arm that connects the key lock to the door latch.)

You can see exactly where it broke here:

My problem is, you can't purchase just the actuator bar, you have to purchase the entire latch/lock unit. Which goes from the outer door handle, to the door latch, to the cables that connect the inner door handle. It's pretty large and the dealer wants more than $350 for it. Anyone here have this problem? Do you think i can go to the hardware store, purchase a washer, weld it to the actuator, then glue it onto the door latch?
