Default Exhaust Help, please

Hi everybody,

I just got my first Lexus...is a 1995 sc400. It is stock, 120k.

I want to give the exhaust a deeper tone, but don't want it too loud. I kind of like the magnaflow 14829 with x pipe sound I have heard on the youtube clips.

However, could doing this hurt my engine? Will it mess with the Oxygen sensors and cause my check engine light to come on? If so, please recommend a good set of mufflers that I can put on without messing with the cats and resonators.

Thanks!

i think the check engine light will only come on if you remove the cats. I have the 5zigen Fireball megas with straight pipe from the cats an no check engine light

For a nice deep note that wont be too costly, I went with Xcellerator mufflers. I knew that they were going to be temporary, but so far have been happy with them. When I was getting them put on I had them take out all the other restrictions. I dont know if they really qualify as mufflers, but I think that the SC400 has what looks like 4 total.
I dont know if its just them or the gutted cat combo but it sounds like a Ferrari taking off behind the drivers seat. Not too loud but sounds mean.
The Xcellerators are straight through design and are comparable to Flowmasters.
The check engine light didnt come on until I hollowed out my cats.

Unless you're OBDII, (which you are not) I don't think anything you do to the exhaust downstream of the manifolds will trigger a light. I'm turbo with no cats and I don't have an issue in mine. I assume it's the same situation on the SC400, though I have only modded my SC300. The SC400 is stock.

Thanks for this info!

So if I get a magnaflow x-pipe and magnaflow mufflers, and I run the pipes straight to the mufflers, then doing this will all be behind the cats? Plz forgive my ignorance.

First, Welcome to CL! Where the heck are you in Alabama? Its about freaking time someone besides me is from Alabama!

Yes everything will be behind the cats. Depending on what model you have, you may have 3 cats, 2 of them up front, and one in the middle, and 2 resonators, then 2 mufflers. Or you may have 2 cats up front and a middle resonator, then 2 more resonators, then 2 mufflers.

I have removed the front cats with straight pipe, removed the middle resonator, and removed the 2 rear ones, and kept the stock mufflers. It sounds quite nicely now without any drone inside the car. Adding Magnaflows will give a more V-8 sound, but will be a little louder. That choice is up to you. Pm me your email address and I will send you a video clip of what mine sounds like. This will give you an idea and will allow me to try out my new Iphone 4 in HD!

Again Welcome and let us know what you decide. There was a set of new in the box Magnaflows in the classifieds section. His name is Trent in south of Nashville, TN.
