Question Torque Converter V.S. 5spd manual

I have an auto '92 SC300 and plan to have a stage 1.5 toyomotor turbo setup by the end of august. I just have a question. I have found a place online that sells 5 spd manual tranny's for our cars for around 700-1100 (of cource i would need a stronger clutch). And torque converters run around 900. Sooo, which would be better for a stage 1.5 turbo setup?? I have been told that the auto cant hold as much power as a manual. Also, which launches faster?? I know you get more consistant launches with an auto but would manual be quicker?? thanks for the help.

Excellent question. Personallyy, I'd go w/ the 5-speed and put a good clutch/flywheel combo on it. The auto w/ a TC will launch alot faster, but I feel the 5-speed will give you the best overall benifit. It will handle more power and will take less parasitic drag off the motor. Not to mention that manuals are just more fun to drive. An expert driver can probably get a 5-speed with proper clutch to launch just as good as a TC'd auto anyway, so a little practice with a few sets of tires, and you'd be good to go.

It's going to cost a lot more to go with the 5-speed. tranny, flywheel, clutch, clutch cylinders, clutch pedal assembly, center console pieces, installation/modification.

Might as well put in a 6-speed if you're going thru all that trouble.

REMEMBER THIS!
PEOPLE WILL CALL YOU A ***** FOR DRIVING AN AUTO.
Just tell them to shut up.
NOTHING and I mean NOTHING will launch harder and cleaner than a buil automatic with stall converter. You can cut 1.4-1.6 sec 60 foot times with some bfg drag radials! GEt a built auto from PHR or SP and a triple disc lock up converter form Precision Industires and you will be the king of your neighborhood from a stop!
