Default sound distortion when playing cd

I have a nakamichi system in the sc400 I recently bought. When I played the radio it sounds great, but when I played cd especially if I turned up the volume a little high there are a lot of distortions. The fact that the radio played ok eliminated speaker problems. So my questions are:
  1. Has anyone experienced similar problems in the nakamichi?
  1. Will cd cleaner help?
  1. Is it more likely to be the cd player or the head unit that needs to be replaced?

Thank you all for your inputs!

scmaster1, Might be your Radio/climate control **** assy. If you have stock speakers, especially in the rear they could be breaking down due to sun/heat from rear window. Simple test is by hooking up a small/cheap working speaker to the existing +/- terminals behind the trunk lining. The link below show the steps you need to take for blown speakers.
