Default Is this a fair price?

I went to my local Lexus dealership today and asked them how much it would cost to fix a rear main seal leak on my motor because my oil leaks pretty bad. They said that it would be $1700 to fix the leak on whatever it may be. Is that a fair price? I mean I know $1700 isn't cheap but the way I look at it is, if I pay them that much and they "fix" it and then it keeps leaking, I always have someone to go back to if it keeps acting up. Whereas if I were to do it myself, which I could, if it keeps leaking, I have more of a headache trying to get it fixed. I was just thinking of letting them worry about fixing it and me shelling out the money for them to do it so that it is essentially their responsibility from now on, not mine. What do you guys think?

1700?? lol, you can always count on Lexus Dealerships to fist you.

i would just spend the money on a low mileage JDM motor. preferably the one mentioned above...as it's closer to that around 2k budget.

LOL! I know it is a relatively simple job to do, it's just I don't have the time or equipment (such as a lift) to do it. I only have one friend that has a garage and he never has any time to help anyone with their cars because he is always working. But trust me I would like to do it myself.

For the rest of you encouraging me to swap my motor, what are the advantages of a 1JZ compared to my 2JZ-GE? And how many miles would someone have one for on here? Only problem is I don't know how I'd get the new motor in my car lol cause I don't have a shop or the tools. Only my friend I mentioned above has that and like I said he wouldn't have the time to help me with a swap either.

There are plenty of people on here and other forums that could use the work. Post your location and ask for a reputable shop or individual. If all fails PM me and I will help you find someone.

The dealership is the last place I would ever take my car. I've had multiple, horrible experiences.

My step-dad just took his Lexus to the dealership for a windshield replacement. They quoted him $1700. He got it replaced the next day for $275 from a place I directed him to.

Any reasonable person wouldn't charge over $500 to fix the leak. The dealership doesn't even know what is wrong, it could be something minor.

Where are you located? I know MANY people in TN who can do the work. That is way too much money. Try to find a shade tree mechanic. Search around. I gaurentee you wont have to pay more than 500 bucks. I would do it cheap.

I did a quick search and I got the name of a couple different shops. I'm going to lunch but I'll edit the post with more when I get back. These are performance shops, but I'm sure they're more reasonable than the dealership.

Here's is an updated list from shops I pulled from SF Regional forums.

First State Motorsports down in DE. Josh and Dan were really helpful with me

I see. I took my supra to FSM and was happy with the work done. No problems with the job done by them, although slightly more expensive then other shops. Try SRT, Swift Racing Technologies.

screw the dealerships.......never ever ever take your car in to any dealer other than to do car WARRANTY work. Find a good indy shop on anything you can't diy yourself. Remember $500 bucks buys alot at Sears,Northern Tool, Harbor Freight,Grizzly, etc.
