Help...Starting problems...

Default Help...Starting problems...

Hello Club CL,

I have a 1jz swap in my 97 sc400 and been having starting problems since the start. Replaced fuel pump, was running a smaller odyssey battery and relocated to a bigger battery in the rear. Alternator, starter, and all mechanical things seem to be in working order. Could it be a bad ecu? I really need a person who has intimate knowledge on 1jz's to help me. Also taking recommendations in the Sacramento (916) area. All advice is appreciated. Thanks!

can u describe your starting problems? As in it won't start at all? Cranks at all? Be a little more specific first then we can go from there. Seeing as you've gone through the fuel issue, i would check for spark next.

It does seem to turn and crank but does not fire? Midnight were the ones that replaced the fuel pump and relocated battery but after taking it home, the problem is still persisting. I also am having an overheating issue, which is why I rather not drive it back or pay for towing at this point.

I would call them and see how they got the car started after they replaced the parts. If they got the car started ask if they had problems when it started up. I would look into spark plugs though and see if there is any spark.

Ya the car seem to be starting fine until I brought it back home. I checked and there is no spark. What is even more weird is that I decided to unplug the ecu and check the connections and I found that the middle plug has what seems to be oil! I am not sure why it is there and why only that middle plug has it. What could possibly make the plugs "leak"? Either way, I sprayed some carb cleaner and wiped both ends down.

bojzs147 (Tony) was nice enough to come down and take a look. It seems as though I am having an ignition pulse issue. I will be checking the ignitor and see if that is short circuited by some wires due to the wiring that was done prior. So it seems it is an electrical problem and not mechanical issue given that I replaced the fuel pump and battery. If not, I may take it into a shop named Speed & Sound that was recommended and take it from there.

From my 1jzgte ignitor unit, does it have the coil packs connnected to that black square box also?
So it may be a problem between the ignitor not sending the signal to the coil packs or the coil packs being shorted and not sending the signal to the ignitor?

i would put money on the ignitor right now, it seems to be a common problem around here. I don't have a 1JZ but i've seen plenty of threads that lead to the ignitor.
