I'm trying to diagnose my transmission issue. I have a 1jz swap with manual set up. When the transmission gets warm, 4th and sometimes 5th gears starts to slip.

No other gears slip accept for these 2 and it only happens when my SC gets warm. Usually takes about 30mins of highway driving before it starts slipping.

I'm going to change the tranny fluid to see if that will fix the issue but I was wondering if anyone else with a 1jz swap has experienced this issue.

I would think if the clutch is going out then 1st, 2nd gear would slip first but this is not the case.

also anybody know the transmission code for a 1jz and how much fluid it takes and what kind of fluid I should use?

 

you're clutch is toasted. A bad clutch usually starts slipping in 4th/5th gear, then quickly gets worse. I'd recommend getting it fixed ASAP before it leaves you stranded.

 

werd replace the clutch and have the flywheel reserfaced.

 

I have the PDF manual.. I can't find it anywhere how much fluid it needs for the tranny. I'm thinking 3quarts. You'll know its full when the fluid starts dripping from the filler plug.

 

Any recommendations on a clutch? I was thinking Exedy twin disc but I think that might be a little over kill for 300-400hp.

 

I run around 400whp and I have the centerforce one, only problem is it sounds like an elephant when you get into first gear.

 

hmmm...having somewhat of the same problem, minus the heat thingy.

 

Wow, so it does happen quickly. 5th is worthless, 4th the same, now 3rd and even 2nd gear are weak.
*Just to make sure, whenever I go anywhere past 15% throttle my engine just revs up but there is no acceleration. I've noticed on my boost gauge that even when I try and go past 1psi the engine just revs and the turbos barely whisper (1JZ).

So, I need clutch + flywheel? (after I just spent a G on the gixxer/drew...timing is awesome =D

 

Well, found a place to get the flywheel resurfaced for $35 = awesome.

Opinion/Experience...
I'm going with either the ACT Heavy Duty 7MGTE
or the ACT Spring 6 Puck.

Both are $550ish, any suggestions?? Please? This is a lot of money for us poor student/no career folk!

 

Are you going to race? If not I don't recommend any stage 3 clutches. Grip is superior but clutch life is short. It's not for the daily driver. Know what you're getting yourself into before buying a performance clutch.

It is my daily driver, but I'm already pushing just over 300 ft lbs/tq.

I race around town if that's what you mean...but I haven't tracked it, would love to but I don't see myself getting to that until later in life, kiiiiiiiiiiinda busy now.

Thanks for the responses, 3000 you may have just saved me from an expensive mistake. I want a performance clutch, definitely something to hold 380hp.

You want to keep the pedal pressure increase as low as possible but still hold the torque to not wear the thrust bearing and crankwalk it.

And for the 1JZ (full front clip) I can just grab any MKIII turbo.

 

I've got mixed reviews about spec clutches. They're really affordable but do they really last? I've heard horror stories about spec clutches blowing up in transmissions.

I'm still weighing the benefits of a Exedy Twin Disc vs Act clutch. I know the Exedy will last longer and hold more power. It might cost more up front but I think it would save me money in the long run. Any body have any experience with a twin Disc or a ACT? I want to find a clutch will hold 300-400hp and last a while (+2yrs if possible). It won't be a daily driver but I usually drift and race whenever I'm in the car. C'mon its turbo everyone want to see what you got

Maybe I'm dreaming but a nice drivable clutch would be nice too, right now my clutch sounds like a elephant when I take off. Currently I have a xtd stage 3, lasted 2 yrs.
