Default what is this for?

I've been wondering what that lil square thing is by the ignition that has some horizontal slits in it. My prom was on sat. night, and i picked my date up in my car (yes a limo did pick us up later) but she kept messing w/ stuff in my car (she's obsessed w/ it) and asked me what this square thing was for. Any ideas???

I always thought it was 1 of 2 things...

1. Thermometer for AC/Heat
2. Handsfree unit.

It's the thermometer/heat sensor. If you unplug it, set the a/c to auto, it will think it's freezing cold all the time, and turn on the heat.
