I would like to know the parts that needed to be replaced when rear main seal is being replaced. It seems that there is rear main seal and retainer do both need to be replaced ? and what seal is on transmission that needs to be replaced. Could somone list parts number. Does anyone knows good cheap place in Denver,Co to get this done.

 

i take it this is an SC300. To replace it you can take the retainer off to make it easier, but i just left mine on and replaced the rear main with the retainer on the car.

word of advice: be careful not to drive the rear main in all the way down. It is supposed to be flush with the retainer plate, not driven in until it stops. I accidentally drove it all the way in and had to order a new rear main because i f-ed it up the first time.

 

It is sc300. is there goodd howto on replacing it. That is goods tip your provided.

 

Without proper tools you can use a cutting board with the retainer out. Get it started nice and straight and then slowly stand on the cutting board--pushing the rms into the retainer. Sounds nuts, but I bent the first one trying to put it in several other ways. This method obviously doesn't apply if you don't remove the retainer.

 

Darn, I don't remember exactly how I did mine, but I definitely removed the retainer so that I could clean the old gasket goo off the block and oil pan, and apply new fipg.

Pretty sure you have to install the seal into the retainer first, before you install the retainer back to the block.

 

I removed my retainer..... didn't know you could do it without?
