Default 5-Spd Trans..problem?

Hi, just got a 92 sc300 5-spd w/39k on it.. and the trans. blew after about I put 1500..My Bro. and I were learning how to drive a manual on it. We don't believe it was from the abuse from that the trans blew. What gives, all I read were high praise from the forum about 5-spd Sc's. do you know how much it is to fixed the trans.?

You probably inadvertently nuked it. If not you, then you should talk to your brother and figure out what he's hiding.

Toyota trannies don't go out at 39k miles without serious neglect or abuse. I've abused my tranny in my 85 for 10k miles (probably far worse than you could imagine) and it's still going strong at 139k miles.

possible that it was neglected or really messed with and run without any fluid before you picked it up

to fix it, just find the W58 5-speed from some toyota (SC300, Supra, etc) like in a junkyard or something and replace it.

you can find 5-speed trannies around for $500-$750 in good shape
your stock clutch and everything should be fine; just needs the tranny itself swapped out which isn't too hard (make sure you go with redline tranny fluid)

Wow, a 92 w/ 39,000 miles? Sweet deal even if the tranny was fuxored. Replace it and check it out for any other signs of abuse. Change all the fluids, plugs, check belts and everything, at ten years old - w/ 39k it wasn't driven much.

Go easy on that thing huh? Drive her but love her too man, or you'll lose her. Like a woman.

Just got an Estimate from my local Lexus dealership...new clutch plus the rest of the other good stuff total up to $1400. Wow, that was expensive..any good trannie place in the Chicagoland area the won't charge about $800 in labor?

Thanks,

oh...sorry guys, I jump the gun on this. Lexus mechanic called and said just the clutch blew. Not the trannies. Still $1400 is bit much to repair isn't it?

Thanks,

Bwahahahaha! What a fricking ripoff!

I'd shop around. That's insane. I could do it myself for less than $200 (not counting labor costs which I don't charge myself).

to replace the clutch, it cost me $575 parts were about 250, and they said 5.5 hrs @ $60 labor- 330 ... not too bad, but like quick said if you can do it yourself you can save quite a bit.

yeah clutch swaps are easy enuf on a front-engined tranny rwd platform

$1400 is WAY too much

you should get out doing $300 by yourself or $600 by a mechanic

Just got back from a place called Turbo Trans. They quoted me a $750. I guess that's not bad consider what the dealer quoted.

Thanks,
