Default Lost SC! Trying to make a plan!

Ok heres the situation. There is an RV lot in my area and someone has parked a nice SC400 out there but its not registered to the lot. The tags look expired it has illinois tags they have 10-07 on the sticker(dont knw id there any different then SC or NC tags where it reads mth - year but thats what it has). So now the lot has posted a note on the car saying that it has to either get register for sale or be moved or they will tow it. I did my research and got the name of the towing company. And im pretty sure that once no one claims it from there they are going to get a nerw title and sell it. So Im wondering how should i go about tryen to get this car from them. I know they are going to try and throw out a jacked up price just because its a lexus. Any suggestion on how i can make a steal for this car?

I know the one that you are talking about...it's the Black one with 20's on it-right? We'll keep the location a secret, lol. If I was you, I'd go for it...they only thing they can say is "No" but then nothing is lost or gained in that situation. Hey man, give me a call...been off the net for a minute.

I am not sure how the laws are in NC but here in CA to claim an abandoned car, you need to file a notice to all the previous owners, then they replay and if any of them have a claim(or something) on the car they can get it. For reasons i wont explain i have seen cars with broken transmission that have been parked for over a year and for some reason the police get involved and then the owner comes right back.

If i were you i would just forget it.

I'd find the owner, and just tell him like it is.. 'Listen, your car is going to be towed and its gonna cost you a chunk of money to get it back. Let me take the car off your hands so you make some money from this situation instead of losing money'

Maybe the owner is in prison for selling drugs? How else can you afford 20's for your Lexus?

It's gonna depend on state laws. I came across the same thing in Arkansas... this old abandoned house by my old high school had a '91 tsi AWD just sitting out behind it. Nobody lived at the house, and it was out there for a few months. I called the DMV about it, and they said that by state law once it gets towed they will perform due dilligence and try to contact the owner. If the owner can't be reached or does not want to pay the cost of towing the car, the state takes possession of the car and auctions it off.

Ryeno's right about titling an abandoned car, there is usually a special form you have to fill out for abandoned vehicles and it invloves contacting all of the previous owners who can at any time can claim the car.

Basically (cliff notes): Your state owns any abandoned car, and the only way you can legally obtain the car is to either buy it from a state auction or get the owner to sign the title over to you. Sorry man.

Dam this sucks! I ran out of time today to call the DMV of the state that its from but i will get on that first thing in the morning. From the way it sounds its like a lose/lose situation. I know once the state gets hands on it, GAME OVER!

It's in private property, state won't get involved unless it's hot. Therefore, after a few weeks and following the proper pocedure to get the towing fee, the tow company will lien the car. Only!!! the current register owner can claim it and pay any outstanding fees to get there car back. Once the lien goes through, the tow company will become the current owner.

OP, your best bet is to keep in contact with the tow people as they are the only ones that can lien it, unless it's hot.

If you really want to claim it, i know a way but you'll get a salvaged title.

Dont you have to have some sort of license or something in order to be able to attend or buy at and auction? Thats what my orginal plans were to just keep in touch with the tow company and try to bs them into thinging the car is in need of a tranny and some other things and get them to sell it to me for dirty cheap, lol. But from the way that everyone is talken its almost impossible to get this car without the owner.

I know this would work in Illinois, but I'm not sure about other states. Work out a deal with the towing company before they tow it, so that when they do, they could get a mechanic's lien on the car for being abandoned at their yard.
