I hooked up the hose to the low pressure port on the compressor, and when I start to release the freon the gauge shoots instantly into the red, giving me cold air until I turn off the freon can, then the pressure drops back to 0 and I get hot air again. Any ideas on what I should do?

You probably have a major leak somewhere. Take it to a radiator shop and let them check it for you.

Look for compressor oil coating something, i had an issue similar to this except it would take a day for it to lose freon. A 68 cent o-ring was busted on the revolution sensor on the compressor.

 

Whatever you do, DONT overcharge the system. I would run some dye through it, and check for leaks at every connection. You can buy some dye from the local parts store with freon in it. Mine was leaking from the evaporator core inside the dash. You wont see this until you pull out some of the dash and remove the trac system. Big pain in the butt. Check the top oring seal, where the high and low fittings go. and lastly check the front of the seal where the clutch attaches on the compressor. These 2 places are known to leak... Hopefully this will you out a little further.
